Extension of School Days: Unideal for Students’ Learning

A school year in the Philippines usually consists of 200 to 210 school days. That means that a typical
Filipino student would spend most of their days studying most of their days in a year, assuming that
students also need to review their lessons on weekends. However, according to PISA 2018, the Philippines
ranks one of the lowest in academic performance. This result can indicate that something is wrong with
the education system in the Philippines. However, the addition in the number of school days does not
recommend improving the academic performance of Filipino students.

There has been a rise in reports of students protesting more academic breaks and students
committing self-hurt due to academic stress. These reports signify the importance of academic breaks,
and it seems that extending school days will not be beneficial to the students.

Whenever the idea of adding more days to a school year comes up, the effects of it on the students'
mental state should be the main focus. Adding more school days will lessen the time of students for their
extracurricular activities. Diminishing the students' time to do other things other than school will make
them less happy and unmotivated to study. Therefore, their academic performance will be affected.

Moreover, the extension of school days has no benefit to the student's academic performance.
Although more school days equates to more days for teachers to teach, it does not substantiate the
improvement of the students' academic performance. According to statistics by CIED, the countries with
the best education systems and high student performance have variations regarding the number of school
days. The top-performing countries in education also have an average of 2194 school days which is less
than the number of school days in the Philippines. These data advocate that the total number of school
days has no direct correlation or significant effect on the students' academic performance, thus negating
the idea of adding more days in school.

In conclusion, there are no benefits with the extension of school days, for it will only cost more
useless expenses. There is no clear evidence that it can enhance the students' academic performance, but
rather, it will cause students' reluctance to study. There can be many ways to improve the students'
academic performance, like introducing other platforms that will integrate students' learning, but
extending the number of school days is none from them.
