Introduction
Kaleidoscope World is a song written and performed by the late master rapper,
Francis Magalona. It is a kind of alternative rock song and was included in Francis
Magalona’s studio album called “Free Man” back in 1995. This song promotes equality,
unity, and love. One of the things that this song conveys is that each individual is their
own definition of beautiful and worthwhile with their capability and personality. Reyno
(2016) claims that Francis Magalona compared people’s differences to a Kaleidoscope;
we often perceived differences negatively, but imagine if all people are the same just
like a Kaleidoscope that only has one color, it would look bland. He also added that
each people’s differences are like a piece of color in a Kaleidoscope that makes it have
a captivating view. A particular line from the song goes “you can’t talk peace and have a
gun” which is an eye opener to bring awareness about the atrocities and abuse that
many people are experiencing. After Francis Magalona passed back in 2009, many TV
shows such as “EatBulaga!” used this song as a way to pay tribute to him. This song
also went on to win awards – it won the 1996 Awit Award for Best Produced Record of
the Year, and the 1996 NU 107 Rock Award for Song of the Year, and it also become
one of the most well-known songs in the industry of Filipino music. On the other hand,
“Habang Buhay” is a song written and produced by its singer, Zack Tabudlo. If
“Kaleidoscope World” talks about societal issues, this song is about loving someone
unconditionally and the joy and elation of looking forward to growing old with that
particular person. Zack Tabudlo himself admits that writing a song with this kind of
theme feels new as he never wrote a song with such a positive and bop theme; he is
used to writing break-up songs. Its retro-pop style is inspired by bands from the 80’s like
the VST Company. “Habang Buhay” was released in 2021 and it is undeniable that it
became a hit song and is often played in places like malls, parties, and bars. It became
of one the most well-known songs in today’s generation for its lyrics and sweet
message that most people could relate to.
