Teacher demonstrates taking a strong breath into the diaphragm placing hands on
sides to show inflation
Teacher asks students to do a correct breath with them

If Students are struggling, teacher will demonstrate an incorrect breath and ask
students to do so with them and then repeat the correct breath

Teacher passes out slips of paper


Teacher shows taking correct breath and blowing onto paper so that paper bends
Explain “I can sustain the paper bend without using all of my air at once”
This is how to sustain a note on an instrument

Ask students to try

Then teacher demonstrates tonguing, moving the paper with each “tongue”

Ask students to try

Teacher demonstrates a rhythm with tonguing and sustained notes on paper


Students and teacher do rhythm together

Teacher asks students to pick up instruments

Without fingering, teacher asks students to transfer the skills to the instruments

Students play the rhythm on their instruments using tonguing and sustained breath
