EXT. OUTSIDE OF A DOOR WITH THE NUMBERS 702 - DAY

Voices can be heard from afar and get more clear with each

LAYLA
So what are studying in school?

MATTHEW
I’m actually getting my doctrine in
veterinary medicine.

LAYLA
Oh my god, that’s so sweet! I
actually wanted to be vet when I
was little.

MATTHEW
Oh? What made you change your mind?

Two shadows are now in front of door 702

LAYLA
Oh you know how things change when
you grow up, plans change,
especially when you start
Highschool.

MATTHEW
Oh. Yeah.

An unlocking noise can be heard and the 702 door is opening.

INT. APARTMENT 702 - SAME TIME

Layla goes inside first, she’s dressed causal but still

professionally, she has on a light blue dress shirt with a
multi-colored long sweater with jeans and boots. She starts
to show off the apartment.

The apartment is clean and tidy, there is some furniture and

some amenities but all are just for show.

LAYLA
(enthusiastic)
So this is the place!

Matthew heads in and is impressed with the look of the place

immediately.

MATTHEW
Wow..

Matthew is looking around with wonder in his eyes. He’s young

and dressed his absolute best because him mom always said to
look nice meeting new people. He’s wearing a white button up
shirt, jeans and brand new black converse.

LAYLA
Let me show you around the place a
little bit more.

MATTHEW
Well I gotta say, I already love it
already.

Layla shows more of the apartment some time passes by.

LAYLA
So yeah, like I said its one
bedroom, one bath. You’ll have a
patio, washer and dryer, parking
fee is a little pricey but it’s up
to you! Me personally, the only red
flag is the limit of two pets.
Honestly you could never have
enough cats, ya’know?

MATTHEW
(laughs)
True. Honestly this place is
perfect and I love it.

LAYLA
Well I’m happy to hear that?

MATTHEW
So, how much? An arm, leg?

LAYLA
(laughs)
No nothing like that it’s-

A slight knock can be heard at the door. Matthew and Layla

look quickly at the door to see another young man by the
door.

INT. APARTMENT 702 - SAME

DENNIS
Hey, excuse me I was supposed to
meet someone here to look at an
apartment.

Matthew has a look of shock on his face.

LAYLA
(surprised)
Oh! I must’ve given you the wrong
time, sorry. You must be-

MATTHEW
Dennis.

Dennis has slight look of confusion but studies Matthew for a

minute and has smug smile on his face. Dennis is young and
about the same age as Matthew, he is wearing a white button
up shirt as well but with a brown vest over it. He has brown
slacks on and black combat boots on as well.

DENNIS
Well I’ll be damned. Matthew. And
hear I thought I would never see
you again.

MATTHEW
Same here.

Layla has a look of confusion as she looks back and forth

between the two applicants.

DENNIS
(smug)
Mhm. You cut your hair?

MATTHEW
(trying to play nice)
Yeah. Wanted change things up a
bit.

After an awkward silence, Layla finally breaks the silence.

LAYLA
So. You two no each other?

MATTHEW
Yes, me and Dennis went to high
school together-

DENNIS
Dennis and I.

Matthew closes his eyes and grits his teeth as if he wants to

say something but bites his tongue.

LAYLA
Oh wow! What a coincidence.

MATTHEW
So Dennis why are you here?

INT. APARTMENT 702 - SAME

DENNIS
I think it’s very obvious why I’m
here, right Lana?

LAYLA
Its Layla.

MATTHEW
So you're looking to get this place
as well?

DENNIS
I sure am Matt.

MATTHEW
Well isn’t that nice! Please don’t
call me Matt.

DENNIS
(smugger than before)
Sounds like their is a problem, is
it me getting this apartment or is
it me calling you Matt?

Matthew takes a deep breathe in and out. He finds his cool

and then puts on a smile here.

MATTHEW
I have no problem. I thinks you who
has the problem, you see here-

Matthew takes a step forward.

MATTHEW (CONT’D)
Daniel. This place is practically
already mine so I recommend you
find another place.
LAYLA
Well actually since both of your
are here-

Dennis also takes a step forward toward Matthew. His smug

look has melted to rugged frown.

DENNIS
Is that so Mat?

Matthew takes a couple steps toward Dennis.

MATTHEW
I would say so, Daniel.

Layla has gone back to silence and is now aware of the

tension that has arisen in this apartment. Not trying to
instigate this, she asks a simple question.

LAYLA
(nervously)
So what high school did you guys
say you went to?

Matthew and Dennis are now face to face, an inch away from
each other.

MATTHEW AND DENNIS

Homicide High. School for the new
assassins of America.

LAYLA
Oh my.

MATTHEW
So what do say Daniel? We both want
this apartment, and both of us
aren’t going to back down for one
another. How about we settle this
the way our alumni used to settle
things?

DENNIS
A fight to death?

Matthew and Dennis both have a quick death stare. Layla is so

scared that she has become frozen and sweats profusely.

DENNIS (CONT’D)
Sounds like a good plan to me.

INT. APARTMENT 702 - SAME

Dennis takes off his sweater vest and throws it on the ground
as declaration of war. Matthew and Dennis get in their
fighting stance, and Layla is watching in panic and wonders
if this is actually happening.

LAYLA
You know, I think you two should
really know the price before-

Matthew and Dennis both yell and run towards each other.
Matthew is about to throw the first punch, but Dennis gets
the upper hand and hits Matthew with a round house kick
straight to the face, and sends Matthew flying straight to
the couch. Dennis then heads over to him to choke him out.

Layla screams. She doesn’t know whether to call the cops or

watch to see who wins because this is probably the most
exiting thing that’s going to happen this whole week.

While Dennis is trying to strangle Matthew, Matthew knees him

in the couch, and gets up from the couch. While Dennis is
attending to his junk, Matthew grabs him and throws him
across the kitchen counter.

DENNIS
Oh hey, granite kitchen counter
tops! Gonna be hard to clean off
your blood!

He gets up quick then grabs a knife from the table and then
tries to cut up Matthew. Matthew then responded by grabbing a
pan from the stove which he uses to block the knife then
knock it out of Dennis’s hand. Matthew swings for Dennis, but
dodges his attack. He then tackles Matthew sending both of
them to the bathroom.

INT. BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS

They try to tear each other apart more, Dennis smashing

Matthews head into the mirror, Matthew tacking off the shower
curtain and using the pole as a weapon, Dennis attempting to
drown to Matthew using the toilet.Matthew is being choked out
by Dennis.

DENNIS
This is a nice bathroom. After this
is over, im putting nothing but
plants in here.

Matthew pokes his enemy in the eyes which causes Dennis to

recoils and let go of Matthew

MATTHEW
Knew you were a sick but a not a
sick bastard.

Matthew then hits Dennis a few times in the face which causes
him to go semi-unconscious, then Matthew drags him outside of
the apartment. Matthew throws him up against the opposite
wall and goes for the finishing blow.

EXT. APARTMENT 702 HALLWAY - SAME

Dennis dodges his attack then gives Matthew a hit to the

crotch, which Matthew attends to quickly. Leaving him open,
Dennis catches his breathe but after they both recover for a
second they get back into fighting.

More punches and kicks are thrown but they both end up at the
stairs at the end of the hallway. They eventually fall
together and tumble straight to the bottom. They fall hard
and fast until both are on their backs, not moving , slightly
coughing blood and groaning with pain.

DENNIS
(injured)
You dead yet?

MATTHEW
(also injured)
No. And I’m not giving up this
place.

DENNIS
Neither I’m I.

Layla comes quickly downstairs.

LAYLA
YOU CRAZY SONS OF- HOLY CRAP. OH MY
GOD. ALL THIS FOR 1200 A MONTH
APARTMENT!

DENNIS
Did you say 1200?

Matthew and Dennis both get up slowly.

LAYLA
THAT’S WHAT I WANTED TO TELL YOU
TWO BUT YOU GUYS WENT APE SHIT!

MATTHEW
That’s kind of out my budget.

DENNIS
Same here.

They both look at each other with a face of defeat. Layla

stops screaming but still has tone in her voice.

EXT. FIRST FLOOR - CONTINUOUS

LAYLA
Well. If you two really want this
place, we have a 2 bedroom for 800
a month. You just need to promise
me not more matched to the death!

Matthew and Dennis both look at each other.

MATTHEW
50/50 spilt rent?

DENNIS
I get to put at least 5 plants in
the living room.

MATTHEW

DENNIS
Deal

They both shake hands.

DENNIS (CONT’D)
So can you help me over me move in
my sectional in? Roommie?

Dennis smiles and puts his arm over Matthew.

MATTHEW
(straight face)
Go fuck yourself dude.

Matthew leaves and Dennis wonders what the problem is.
