Mental Math

Math Standard: Time Frame:

MA 3.1.2.g Fluently (i.e. automatic recall 40min
based on understanding) multiply and divide
within 100.

Learning Objective: Assessment Tool(s) and Procedures:

TSWBAT mentally compute large number - Worksheet
division problems based on their knowledge
of smaller number division problems.

Materials: Technology:
- Whiteboard markers - N/A
- Student whiteboards and markers
- Worksheets

Differentiating Instruction:
- Students will have the opportunity to pair and share to help each other solve problems.

Procedure with time Allotments:

A. Hook/Engage/Pre-Assess Students (1min)
a. I will ask the students to show me with their thumbs if they think they can solve
big numbers in their head.
B. Communicate the purpose of the lesson to students (objective/assessment)
(1min)
a. From there I will tell the students, “Today we are going to use our prior
knowledge of multiplication and division to divide big numbers in our heads”.
C. Instructional Sequence:
a. I will write some small number division equations that they will be able to solve
mentally.
i. After we have solved all these, we will multiply the bigger number in
each of those equations by ten, then repeat the process. We will do this
again by multiplying our original number by one hundred.
ii. We will practice this till the students have demonstrated that they have
gained a grasp of the content by writing the answers on whiteboards for
the teacher to see.
b. The students will complete a short worksheet with questions that will be
handed in to the teacher.
c. If time allows, the students will then play “Wheel of Fortune” or complete an
IXL quiz depending on the time left in the class period.
D. Closure
a. The teacher will ask a student or two to explain how they used mental math to
and prior knowledge or multiplication and division to solve the problems.
