DAVAO ORIENTAL
DAGMAY CLOTH - The Mandaya cloth, Dagmay, is made from abaca fiber and its colors from barks,
seeds, fruits, and other natural dyes. Every Mandaya family that weaves the cloth has a unique design
and is used as a token of peace when tribesmen try to resolve problems among communities.
BASKETS
Lul’londan, Bakuko, Kabaan, Kayad, and Kayad na Al’layan are varieties of containers made from bull or
baw-uy (strips from the palm of leaves) used to store rice or seed of the plants. Pottery making is also
part of their art during those times.
JEWELRY
These are also handmade materials that tell the story of the
dreams and longings. Traditionally, the bead works are red,
yellow, white and black. These materials comes from the
synthetic beads, teeth and tusk to the skulls and bones of
animals, from wood and seeds of plants to the seashell. An
iconic symbol of confidence, wealth, beauty and elegance.

DAVAO REGION ARTS
This twin pair of co-joined cast brass, lidded eight-sided boxes was used by the Islamic Bagobo
people of Mindanao in the southern Philippines to store items associated with the consumption of betel
nut. The boxes are further decorated with a brass chain to which seven bells are attached and a long
metal personal cleaning implement.
