4.8.5 Cross-Connect Wires and Patch Cords

Length Requirements: Horizontal cross-connect wires and patch cords shall not exceed a length
of 5 m (16 ft) . Systems designers shall plan for a combined maximum cable length of 10 m (33 ft)
for patch cords and for equipment connections in the work area and TR. This length is in addition to
the 90 m (295 ft) of cable allowed between the TR and work area outlet.

4.8.4.6 Structured Cabling for Wireless Access Point(s)

For the facilities with Wireless LAN connectivity, Wireless Access Point outlets shall not be
installed more than 3.75 meters above finished floor level.

7.2 100-Ohm UTP Cabling

7.2.1 Bend Radius


In spaces with UTP terminations, cable bend radii shall not be less than four times the cable diameter
for outlet cable.
7.2.2 Pulling Tension
The maximum pulling tension for a 4-pair 24-AWG UTP cable should not exceed 110 N (25 lbf).

4.2.4 The operating voltage of “in-plant party paging stations” shall be 120 Volts AC, 60 Hz.

Cables and splicing materials used on outside plant projects shall be of filled type. Copper cables
shall comply with SAES-T-920, fiber optic cables shall comply with 18-SAMSS-625 and splice
closures shall comply with SAES-T-633.

Copper cables are recommended to be tested for grounds, opens, shorts, crosses, and shield
continuity; and fiber optic cables are recommended to be tested by OTDR for continuity and dB
loss.

Verify that connecting hardware used for backbone cable connections meet the requirements for
reliability, safety, and transmission performance specified in:
• EIA TIA-568A
• ANSI / NFPA 70
Verify if the transmission cable is Single-Mode Fiber, then the Maximum length from the closet to
the main cross-connect is 3,000 m (8,200 ft).

Ensure that Solid State (electronic) arresters qualified by UL 497 is


used within Saudi Aramco for primary protection devices when
designing or constructing new facilities where the ground potential
rise (GPR) does not exceed 350 V.

Ground Potential Rise (GPR)
When communications facility with metallic member is within 1.0 km of power facility, a GPR
analysis shall be done. Based on the calculated GPR voltages, appropriate protection devices and
grounding shall be incorporated in the design of the communications facility. The cable design or
location shall be such that the GPR exposure does not exceed 50% of the cable core-to-sheath
dielectric rating. GPR calculations, grounding and recommended protection equipment shall be
provided as part of the project design package. Only if there is uncertainty regarding provided design,
interpretations shall be provided through the Saudi Aramco Communications Standards Committee
Chairman. A copy of the GPR analysis shall be included with the design package.

5.1.1.2 All metallic loops in Saudi Aramco are considered exposed to lightning, except any on
premises extensions that are:
a) Not exposed to 300 volts or more and
b) Not extended to a separate building located more than 43 m (140 ft.) away.

 Fiber optic test requirements as per SAES-T-624 Table 1 that, the maximum
attenuation of each fiber within a cable, when normalized to a length of 1 km 1- At
wavelength = 1,300 nm, shall be 0.5 dB km or less, and 2- At wavelength = 1,550 nm,

shall be 0.3 dB km or less. 3- Individual splice insertion loss shall be .05 dB average
link splice loss with no single splice loss above 0.1 dB for fusion splices, and 0.1 dB
average link splice loss with no single splice loss above 0.2 dB for mechanical splices
4- Connectors shall have insertion losses of 0.5 dB or less.

Buildings larger than 100 m² (1076 ft²) in size (usable space) shall have a Telecommunications Room
as a minimum space requirement. In multi-story buildings a minimum of one Telecommunications
Room shall be provided for each floor level. There is no maximum number of TRs that may be
provided within a building. See paragraph 4.4.2.16 “Size Requirements.”

All telecommunications cable and equipment shall be properly grounded in accordance with Saudi
Aramco Engineering Standards and TIA/EIA-607 Commercial Building Grounding and Bonding
Requirements for Telecommunications

An additional TR shall be placed when distances between the IWA and the Telecommunications
Room exceed the maximum length (90 meters [295 feet]) for horizontal cabling

Lighting of Telecommunications Rooms and Closets shall be a minimum of 540 lux (50 foot-
candles) measured 91 cm (3 feet) above the finished floor level. Locate light fixtures a minimum of
2.6 meters (8 feet. 6 inches) above the finished floor.

Horizontal cable runs shall not exceed 90 meters (295 feet).

4.4.2.18 Clearances

Telecommunications Room (TR) layouts shall allow a minimum of 91 cm (36 inches) of clear
work space in front of equipment and termination fields. It is important to note that the clearance is
measured from the outermost surface of equipment. A minimum access of 76 cm (30 inches) shall
be provided to the rear of equipment for maintenance purposes.
SEMCO's PR-855 U.L. Classified Firestop Sealant and 3M Brand Fire Barrier Caulk CP 25 and Putty 03
U.L. Classified Fire Stopping Sealant or equivalent sealants are acceptable fire retardant sealants for
use inside buildings. All fire sealants used inside building (except at the building conduit entrance
from the outside) must be listed as complying with UL 1479.

b) Load coil spacing (Saudi Aramco uses H-88 Type; 1829 m load coil spacing).

4.3.6.5 Typical Telecommunications Equipment Room Requirements


The HVAC requirements of each piece of equipment must be considered. The table below lists the
equipment requirements and shall be considered minimum for all equipment rooms:

Verify that excavations for precast manholes provide a minimum clearance of 205 mm between the
exterior wall surfaces (ends and sides) of the manhole and the surfaces of the walls of the excavation.

Excavated trench for the new manholes to be constructed in vehicular traffic areas will be having the
minimum depth cover of 355 mm above the MH roof.

Verify that the minimum cover requirements of 600 mm for copper buried cable is maintained for
the excavated trench prior cable laying commenced.

Ground resistance of 25 ohms or less is established for the installed main electrodes that consist of a
minimum of 2.44 m (8 ft.) .

4.3.5.1 Working Clearances


A clear work space of 91 cm (36 in.) shall be provided in front and 76 cm (30 in.) to the rear of
terminals and equipment mounted on floor racks and floor support structures. When an equipment
rack(s) (e.g., 19 inch/48 cm) is mounted parallel to an equipment room wall a clearance space of 15
cm (6 inches) shall be maintained between the outer edge of the rack (s) and the equipment room
wall.
A minimum clearance of 30 cm (12 in) shall be provided between the top rail of cable trays and
ceilings. Additionally, there shall be a minimum of 76 cm (30 inches) of clearance (access space) for
maintenance and operational work forces to one side of the cable tray pathways.

Telecommunications equipment rooms shall have adequate and uniform lighting with a minimum
intensity of 50 foot-candles (LM/ft²) measured 91 cm (36 inches) above the floor level.

Cross-connect fields, patch panels, and active equipment in the TR shall be placed to allow
interconnection via jumpers/patch cords and equipment cables whose combined length does not
exceed.
 6 meters (20 ft) per link for horizontal cross-connections and interconnections. (TR)
 20 meters (66 ft) per link for other cross-connections and interconnections. (IC, MC)

The 'PANI' grounding method represents the ultimate grounding practice for
telecommunications networks. The PANI model sub-divides a ground bar into four sectors, P
- A - N - I, which are identified as Surge Producers, Surge Absorbers, Non-Isolated Equipment,
and Isolated Equipment

equipment, Cable Shield/Cable Vault Ground Bar and MDF/Entrance Cable Protector Ground Bar)

4.6.5.3.1 The ground busbar shall:


 be a predrilled tin plated copper busbar provided with holes for use with standard sized lugs;
 be sized in accordance with the immediate application requirements and with consideration of
future growth;
 have minimum dimensions of 6 mm (¼ in) thick x 100 mm (4 in) wide and variable in length;

4.6 Main and Lateral Conduits


4.6.1 The total number of main and lateral conduits (includes fiber optic requirements as well as
copper conductor requirements) to be placed in a proposed conduit installation shall be designed to
care for:
a) Immediate requirements,
b) Expected growth over the economical period,
d) Plus one conduit shall be reserved for maintenance and repair purposes. (This requirement applies
to above grade telecommunications conduit systems as well; i.e., plant areas, including off-shore
sites). This conduit shall not be used for new cable growth requirements unless a different
conduit is to be cleared for maintenance/repair purposes by the same project,

4.4 Acoustical booths shall be furnished for the party paging stations
in areas where ambient noise levels exceeds 80 dBA. The ambient
noise level measured inside the acoustical booths shall not exceed 80
dBA.

4.5 Loudspeakers shall be installed in areas where ambient noise


levels exceed 90 dBA (refer to SAES-A-105).

6.13 The loudspeaker for the party paging system shall be mounted to
a minimum height of 2.5 meters. The loudspeaker cone shall not point
upwards in a vertical direction.

5.2.6 Handset cable of party paging stations shall be retractile and


extendible to at least 180 cm.

What is SINAD measurement?


SINAD is a receiver audio quality measurement that is typically used
for mobile stations operating on an analog system, such as AMPS. It
is the ratio of Signal+Noise+Distortion divided by Noise+Distortion,
expressed in dB. SINAD is measured using the test set's Audio
Analyzer.

In pulling cables do not exceed 110 N (25 lbf) for category 5e or 6 twisted-pair cable, 178 N (40
lbf) for the Series 6 (RG6) coaxial cable and follow manufacturer recommendations for the
optical fiber cable. Leave a minimum of 1 m (3 ft) of cable slack at the distribution device and
0.25 m (8 in) at the information outlet
