1. CAGAYAN VALLEY
Cagayan Valley is in the Northeastern part of Luzon. It is irrigated with waters from Cagayan
River-the longest river in the country and is composed of provinces namely.
A). BATANES
The Ivatans are the people living in Batanes Group of Islands.

Their houses have unique architectural forms made up of limestones walls, reed, and cogon roofs.
The designs and materials are chosen because they are strong enough to withstand the numerous
typhoons and earthquakes that hit the group of islands because of its geographic location

VAKUL is a head gear used by the Ivatan women to protect them from the heat of the sun and the
rains.
SOOT a rain cape made from fronds that covers the upper part of the body down from the neck of
the men. It is made up of woven fibers of the VUYAVUY palm- a plant like coconut.

B). ISABELA
One of the largest provinces in the Philippines located in Cagayan Valley Region. It is host to
several historical sites.
TUMAUINI CHURCH is a Roman Catholic Parish church of San Matias Apostol. This Baroque
Church was Built in 1873 and can be found in the municipality of TUMAINI, Isabela. It is made
from red bricks ornamented with carvings of flowers, leaves, scallops, saints, religious symbols, and
other fanciful motifs. The unique cylindrical belfry of the church looks like a huge wedding cake
because of its design motifs like laces, hearts, and beads.
C). NUEVA VIZCAYA
Located near Ifugao, Benguet, and Quirino. The Gaddangs of Nueva Vizcaya are known for their
crafts and textiles.
BAKWAT is a belt used by mothers after giving birth. This cloth is usually adorned on the central
portion with white beads as accents embellished in patterns that represent rivers and mountains.
2. CENTRAL LUZON
A. BULACAN
Its arts and crafts include the singkaban, pastillas wrapper, firecrackers and goldsmithing in
Meycauayan.
The women cut intricately designed pastillas wrappers adorned with different linear, curvilinear, and
geometric designs that depict local floras and scenes of everyday rural life.
SINGKABAN is the local term for bamboo arches designed with kayas or wood shaving. These are
used as decorative arches that adorn the entrance of barangay or town during fiestas and other grand
celebrations.
MEYCAUAYAN, BULACAN is known for its jewelry industry. Craftsmen fashion trinkets from
precious metals such as gold and silver, and precious and semi-precious stones, pearls and diamonds.
JEWELER is a person who makes, repair, or sells jewelry; traces jewelry designs to the metal; cuts,
bonds and shapes to form jewelry pieces.

B. PAMPANGA
Known for its giant lanterns or parol.
Its special feature is its dancing lights in several shapes, colors that form intricate geometric
patterns.
The parols are used to adorn houses, buildings not only in Pampanga but all over the Philippines
during the Christmas Season.

CARVING
Laguna is a province with lakes and mountains rich in natural resources and fertile soil for farming.

THE PHILIPPINES”.
√ UKIT is the local term for carving.
√ Paete carvers usually produce wooden religious images and wood panels with decorative floral

Angono is considered as the “Art Capital of the Philippines” because of the town’s rich artistic
expressions that include music, painting, sculpture, and folk arts.
>It is also known for its higantes.
> The higantes are big papier mache figures of humans that represent farmers and fishermen.
According to stories, the original higantes were representation of hacienderos during the Spanish
colonial period. The inhabitants of angono paraded these higantes on the streets to ridicule the
arrogant and cruel landlords.
>The earliest known “higantes” are composed of a father, mother, and a child measuring between 7-
10 feet.These are traditionally paraded on the 22 nd and 23rd of November in Angono during the
Higantes Festival.
3. TAAL, BATANGAS
> It is famous for producing embroidered pina fabric, made from fibers of pineapple and woven into
a costly fabric.These are used for pina barong, wedding gowns, and other formal attires.
>The burda, called CALADO, is painstakingly made by three groups of people- the designer, the
embroider, and the cutter. The most common motifs for their embroidery are leaves and flowers,
which enhance the fine, smooth, and delicate qualities of the textile.
> BALISONG is also known as a butterfly knife. Its name is derived from “BALI”, the Filipino
term for broken, and “SUNGAY” which means horn. This is a type of knife that can be folded
closed like a fan and comes in different sizes.

> BATANGAS is considered as the “BALISONG CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES”.


Batangueno blacksmith have gained such renown for the quality of their workmanship that
Hollywood producers employ them to create props for big-budget films.

4. QUEZON
> LUCBAN is famous for the “PAHIYAS FESTIVAL” celebrated on the 15th of May to honor San
Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.
> During the festival, the townspeople decorate their houses with products and colorful thin rice
wafers called KIPING.
> KIPING is made from ground glutinous rice that is thinly coated on mature leaves and steamed
over low fire.
5. BICOL REGION
> Among the arts and crafts of Bicol region include baskets, bags, slippers, coin purses, and other
crafts that are made from abaca and raffia fibers. The abundance of these natural fibers in the region
allowed the Bicolanos to excel in weaving. Their motifs are simple yet very colorful when compared
to those of the Northern Luzon cultural communities.

Architecture
Vigan, considered as the “Intramuros of the North,” retains the Spanish colonial architecture
along its narrow and cobbled-stoned streets known as Calle Crisologo.
Textile
Inabel is a hand weaving technique of the Ilocanos that is produced using traditional
wooden looms. The different designs represent different meanings: the dizzying “binakol”
weave represents the wave of the sea. They believe that this design protects them from bad
spirits.

Burnay is an unglazed earthen jar with small opening. It is used for storage for water and
rice grains and as container for salt, brown sugar. Basi (local wine) and bagoong (fermented
fish). The potters mix fine gravel, sand and ashes and fire the clay to make the burnay heavy
and sturdy.
2. PANGASINAN
Weaving The arts and crafts of Pangasinan include the smoothly woven Bolinao mats made
from buri or raffia leaves, and the bamboo crafts (baskets furniture) of San Carlos.
3. CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION (CAR)
KALINGA
Textile The native of Kalinga are skilled weavers. One of their finest products is their
textiles, which is characterized by red stripes and white, yellow, and black geometrical
patterns.
The southern Kalinga women wear the wrap-around skirt or tapis called kain, which
reaches below the knee. The northern Kalinga wear saya, an ordinary woman’s skirt
covering the body from waist to feet.
The color used in their textile have cultural meanings: red signifies bravery; black is for
soil or land; white is for the flowers of the coffee trees; yellow for the sand; and green
for the mountains.
Basketry of the Kalinga shows their fine craftsmanship. The labba is bowl-shaped basket
made from rattan, with sizes that vary from 20 to 150 cm in diameter.
Tattooing is another form of art of the Kalinga. Because it usually covers the chest and the
arms, it may be considered as clothing and decorations. It also signifies a rite of passage
from youth to adulthood, a mark of heroism, and bravery and one’s status in the community.
The design consists of geometric patterns and lines.

Wang-od is the last “mambabatok” or traditional Kalinga tattoo artist. She uses a mixture of
charcoal and water that is tapped onto the skin through a thorn end. They are believed that if
someone of the bloodline does tattoo, it will get infected.

 Ifugao means people form the hills
 Non cordillera people are called IGOROTS.
 Their arts and culture revolve around rice as a prestigious crop.
 Ifugao’s weave a loincloth called IKAT an Indonesian term meaning “TO BIND
TOGETHER”
 Their motif is characterized by diamond stripes of white and red stripes. The dominant color
is BLUE.

 Weaving in Ifugao is an exclusive task for women.
 Ifugaos are also great basket weavers.
 Ifugaos are also known for AMULETS that are made of BEADS, GOLD and BRONZE.
 These amulets are called LINGLING-O or DINUMUG used s fertility symbols and worn
around the neck.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE
 Located in cordillera central mountain
 Mountain province is also known for hanging coffins and mummified bodies.
 The mummies of the Mountain Provinces are called fire mummies, Benguet mummies,
Kabayan mummies
 The province of Mountain province is home for IBALOIS
 BODY TATTOS – form of body art practiced by most of the cultural communities in
the Philippines to Visayas and Mindanao.
 Tattoo is part of clothing and considered decoration.
 Importance of TATTOOS:
1. Signifies a rite of passage from youth to adult life
2. Heroism
3. Status in the community
4. Bravery
 People of BONTOC are great weavers
 Fabrics of BONTOCs are used for blanket and clothing called SINIWSIWAN
 These fabrics are used for WANES or men’s G string (BAHAG)
 For the women it is used as wrap around called GETUP or LUFID.
 The motif of the BONTOC’s include geometric shapes of things around them such as
man, lizard, mountain, rains, and flower.
 Married women of Bontoc and Kankanaey in the Northern Cordillera wears a type of
belt called GINASPALA wanes. With INAWIN designs composed of zigzag pattern
woven in double faced with braided warps that end as tassels.

o Bontocs and ifugaos are the original settlers of ABRA.
o People of Abra use natural dye and still practicing loom weaving and they embellish the
woven fabric of embroideries in their fabrics.
o The Tingguians, also called Isneg, are engaged in various crafts.
o The most important of which is bamboo crafts production.
o It is for this reason that Abra is aggressively positioning itself as the “Bamboo Capital of the
Philippines”.
o Tingguian designs are largely linear and simple but are assigned with many meanings.
o Some textiles are reserved for use only during special occasions such as birth-giving,
nuptials, and harvesting.
o The vividness of colours in this shroud only suggests the level of mastery they have in
controlling the strength of the dyes they make from readily available sources around them.
