Answers to the Quiz

1. The tension force provides the centripetal force.

2. The force that causes this acceleration and keeps the body moving along the circular
path is acting towards the centre. This force is called the centripetal (meaning
‘centre-seeking’) force.
3. We do not see the earth moving towards the moon because Newton’s 2nd law states a
= F/m. The Mass of earth is huge and so acceleration is very negligible. Hence we do
not see Earth moving towards the moon.
4. Whenever an object falls towards the earth, an acceleration is involved. This
acceleration is due to the earth’s gravitational force. Therefore, this acceleration is called
the acceleration due to the gravitational force of the earth (or acceleration due to
gravity). It is denoted by g.
5. Whenever objects fall towards the earth under Earth’s gravitation force alone, we say
that the objects are in free fall.
6. Height the object reaches is 70 m. time = 2s, v = 0, u = ?.
V = u -gt
u = gt = 10x2 = 20 m/s

7. The magnitude of the gravitational force of 55 kg on the surface of Earth = 55 x g = 55 x

10 = 550 N
8. u= 60km/h = 16.6 m/s.
The falls from a cliff, in 10 minutes = 10x60 = 600
g = 10 m/s.
We have to find the height of the cliff.
S = ut + 1/2gt^2
= 16.6x600 + ½ x 10 x 600 x600
= 9960 + 18,000
= 27960 m
9. Density of a large ship is very small, smaller than water due to its large volume. Hence it
float.
The iron nail sinks as its density is larger than water due to its small volume.
The object will sink.
10. Buoyant force or upthrust is weight of the fluid displaced when an object is partially or
fully immersed in water.
11. R.D = Density of the object / Density of water
1.2 = Density of the object/Density of water
Density of the object = 1000 x 1.2 = 1200 kg/meter cube

12.

Pressure is the force applied per unit area by one object on another.

The surface area on which the force operates is inversely proportional to the
pressure. The smaller the surface area, larger is the pressure exerted.

Because the pressure on the shoulders is relatively large, it is difficult to handle a

school bag with a thin strap.

The contact surface area of a narrow strap is extremely small. As a result, the
shoulder is under a lot of stress.

Thus, it is difficult to hold a school bag having a strap made of a thin and strong string

13. Given the force of attraction between 2 masses m and distance r is F.

If masses are tripled and distance reduced by quarter then new Force is

G x 3m x 3m
—-------------
r/4xr/4

= 9x16 F = 144 F

14. A ball is thrown vertically upwards, with a velocity of 100 m/s

u=100 m/s.
v=0
g = -10 m/s

v^2 - u^2 = 2xgxs

0 - 10000 = 2 x -10 x s
s = -10000/-20 = 500 m
Time taken to reach the surface.
v=u-gxt
v = 0, u = 100, g = 10 m/s
t = -u/g = -100/-10 = 10 s.

15.

Mass of the ball = 15 KG

Volume = 0.2 m^3
g = 10 m/s

Find the buoyant force, it is the weight of the water displaced..

volume of water = Volume of ball = 0.2 m^3.
Density of water = 1000 kg/m^3

Mass of water = volume x density = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 Kg

Weight of the Water displaced = 200 x g = 2000 N.
