Question one

a) Explain the different ways in which you could employ the knowledge of set theory in
running your business.
b) Kabale investments club limited has 30 members. Of these members, 13 bought shares in
a clay works factory and 15 in metal works factory. 5 members did not buy shares in any
of the two factories. Determine the
i) number of members who bought shares in both factories
ii) the probability that a member bought shares in only one factory.
iii) the probability that a member bought shares in at least one factory?
c) Muhanga investments Ltd sold shares to 30 people in its three departments; plastics,
batteries and polythene. 18 people bought shares in plastics, 15 in batteries and 13 in
polythene. The number of people who bought shares in all the three departments is equal
to the number of those who didn’t buy any shares. 10 bought shares in plastics and
polythene, 3 in polythene and batteries only and 8 in plastics and batteries. Each person
bought at least one of the shares. Determine the
iv) number of people who bought shares in all the three departments
v) number of people who bought shares in only one department.
vi) If a person is chosen at random, what is the probability that he/she bought shares
in more than one department?
Question two
a) A shuttle transports 5 first year students and 10 second year students from their hostel to
the University. What is the probability that a student picked at random from the shuttle is
in first year?

b) A box contains 5 raw oranges and 7 ripe ones. An orange is picked at random from the
box and not put back. A second orange is then picked out. Find the probability that

(i) Both oranges are ripe

(ii) The second orange is ripe

c) John wants to go to Mombasa with his girlfriend for a holiday. They might use bus, train
or aeroplane. The probabilities of using bus, train or aeroplane are 0.3, 0.8 and 0.6
respectively. The corresponding probabilities of arriving on time having used bus, train or
aeroplane are 0.2, 0.8 and 0.1 respectively. Find the probability of
i) having used bus given that they arrived on time
ii) They arrived on time
d) Two ordinary dice are rolled simultaneously. Find the probability that

i) The sum on the two dice is less than ten

ii) The two dice show a double

e) (i) What do you understand by mutually exclusive events?

(ii)Events A and B are such that they are mutually exclusive. Given that P(A)=4/10 ,
P(B)=3/10 Find P(AUB)
