Main Function of Radio Module in AirScale BTS of LTE

In this lesson, we will describe the main function of the radio module in the Nokia AirScale BTS through
these topics:

1 RF Module Overview

2 Radio Module Naming Convention

RF Module Overview

3 types of Radio Modules are considered in the present release:

Flexi Radio Module (FRM),

Remote Radio Head (RRH),

AirScale Massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna (MAA).

RF Module Overview

Narration - RF Module Overview

Three types of Radio Modules are considered in the current release:

Flexi Radio Module, FRM, which is optimized for multi-sector Macro BTS;

Remote Radio Head, RRH, which is optimized to support a single sector with 1, 2, 4, or 8 pipes for
MIMO and Beamforming;

AirScale Massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna, MAA.

Each RF Module, either FRM or RRH, contains:

the Radio Part, including the transmitter-receiver chains and the front end.

the OBSAI / CPRI connectivity to/from the System Module.

The RF module's radio part consists of several independent branches (pipes) that can support several
carriers (frequency blocks for TDD-LTE) within the Radio Module's bandwidth.
Note: since for TDD-LTE duplex is in the time domain, the duplex filter for UL/DL separation is not
needed (only a passband antenna filter)

A massive MIMO adaptive antenna (MAA) is a system of independent radio units integrated with a
common antenna.
MAA supports enhanced traditional MIMO technology (mMIMO) using more than eight antennas to
increase network performance. Massive MIMO adaptive antennas are compatible with Nokia AirScale
system module.
Using MAA saves OPEX/CAPEX due to the lack of RF jumpers between the radio module and antennas.
F O R F RM A ND RRH F O R MA A

Each RF Module (FRM or RRH) contains:

Radio Part (Transmitter and receiver chains, front end);

OBSAI / CPRI / eCPRI connectivity to/from the System Module.

The radio part of the RF Module consists of several independent branches (pipes) which can support
several carriers (frequency blocks for TDD-LTE) within the available RM’s bandwidth.

Note:
Since for TDD-LTE duplex is in the time domain, the duplex filter for UL/DL separation is not needed (only
a passband antenna filter).
F O R F RM A ND RRH F O R MA A

MAA is used to support massive MIMO.

It includes both the function of RRH and the Multiple Antenna elements.

Massive MIMO

Increase in throughput and capacity.

Multiple data streams for a large number of users.
