Essay 1 Reflective Essay

During my first semester at Tamiu, the course English 1301 had a very welcoming aspect.

Many new things were presented in 1301 like making an essay on a genre. One thing I acquired

from my 1301 class was navigating the library and looking for peer-reviewed sources. Looking

for peer-reviewed sources was an easy task to accomplish due to past knowledge I gathered in

1301 so I quickly gathered more information on my topic with the library at my disposal. Also, in

my history 1302 class, the professor is very observant about the information and how it is given. I

applied the knowledge of connecting data just like in history but into my English class.

Out of the many things I learned in my English 1301 class visual analysis was not used in

the first essay of 1302. The first essay did not require any visual analysis so only information from

the peer-reviewed articles was used to support the experiment and get further data on results.

Another thing I learned that was not applicable to this first essay was the citation in the format

APA because the format for this essay was MLA.

This essay really took some effort to finish and a lot of information to gather and a lot of

results to analyze but the thing I would like to apply to other courses is the search and use of peer-

reviewed sources. They always have information that is mostly up to date and all of them have

been revised by experts so all of them have data that is backed up by various experiments from

multiple peer-reviewed sources. I would like to bring that teaching and put it to work in other

classes.

Out of all the many things that I can apply to other classes formatting in MLA would not

be applicable to other classes. Many classes like my courts class ask me to format everything I

write in APA and some other classes use the Chicago style format for writing. Learning too much

of one can be a good thing but messing up with other styles is very common especially when you

have other classes that need other formats.

Starting off my experiment with my outside research helped me improve my writing in a

way that I can describe the effects of the experiment better instead of analyzing someone and

gathering the results from them. Approaching new writing tasks will get easier with time due to

the constant change of mind of me putting myself in the situation of the topic that I am writing

about and from there give better results and conclusions to my writing.

Feedback was distributed among the class on several days one before and one after the

second draft. My writing strength from what I gathered in the comments is my alignment of

evidence throughout the writing process and from there I have my weakness being my wording

and my word placing as many of the sentences confused my classmates. These are still my

strengths and weaknesses from 1301 that I haven’t pushed forward and still fall prey to while

making my writing assignments.

The most challenging part of this essay was finding good peer-reviewed articles for my

experiment. My experiment was on coffee and its effects of it and while I had a good idea of what

I wanted to do I just couldn’t find any good peer-reviewed articles that seemed fit for my

experiment due to some being in other languages or some being purely full of math equations to

determine the results.
