Dear Learner,

Good day!
In this week, you will learn to explain how fossil records, comparative
anatomy, and genetic information provide evidence for evolution. (S10LT-IIIf-39)

Specifically, you will learn the following to:

1. compare the stages of embryonic development of the different
vertebrates;
2. analyze the comparison of amino acid sequence of the five species;
and
3. explain the importance in studying the remnants of the past and how
the three evidences of evolution proved that evolution took place.

In this lesson, taking good care of one’s body is being integrated.

Guide Questions:
1. In what stage of development of the organisms are they most
similar?

___________________________________________________________________

2. In relation to your answer in Q1, identify the structures that are

similar among the organisms. You can describe the structures in
your own words when you cannot name them (Hint: There are three
similar structures).

3. In stage 3 of development, give a brief comparison between the

developed structures among the organisms.

Activity 2 Instructions: Answer the questions briefly. (5 points)

From your comparison on the picture of embryonic development,

can embryonic development be an evidence that evolution took
place? Explain.

Activity 3 Instructions: Please practice your writing skills by copying

this on your notebook.
1. EVIDENCE FROM FOSSIL RECORDS
Fossils - are examples of evidences
that paleontologists use in studying
evolution.
- these are traces of organisms
that lived in the past and
were preserved by natural
process or catastrophic
events.
- they can be remains of
organisms which include
bones, shells, teeth and also
feces embedded in rocks,
peat, resin, and ice.

2
- Most fossils were commonly found in sedimentary rocks.
- They were from the hard parts of the organism like woody
stem, bones, or teeth.
Paleontologist - a person who studies fossils.

2. EVIDENCE FROM COMPARATIVE ANATOMY

Comparative anatomy centers on the study of comparing
similarities and differences in body structures of different species to
determine evolutionary relationships.
Classification:
A. Homologous structures - perform different functions in the species
living in the different environment, or it may have the same origin
but different functions. Example of homologous structures is the
forelimbs of mammals which are structurally the same, but
functionally different.

B. Analogous structures
Structures of unrelated species may evolve to look alike,
because they serve a similar function. The structures are similar
because they evolved to have the same function, not because they
were inherited from a common ancestor.

3
3. EVIDENCE USING GENETIC INFORMATION
You have also learned from the previous module that all living
organisms share the same genetic material (DNA), the same or
highly similar genetic codes, the same basic process of gene expression,
and the same molecular learning blocks such as amino acids. These
similarities between biological molecules of organisms reflect shared
evolutionary ancestry.
Comparison of the sequence of nucleotides in the DNA of an
organism to the sequence of another organism allows us to see
similarities. Similarities in the biochemical analysis and evaluation of
the amino acid sequencing of the organism’s DNA provide excellent
evidence of interconnection or common ancestry. The greater the
similarity between the amino acid sequences of the two organisms, the
closer is the relationship.

Activity 4 Instructions: Compare the amino acid sequences of the five

species in table 1 and answer the guide questions. (20
points)
Table 1. Amino Acid Sequence
