Topic/Subject Matter Finding the Rate or Percent in a Given Problem

Competency Finds the rate or percent in a given problem. (M6NS-
Competency Code IId-142)
Objective/s Find the rate or percent in a given problem.
Presentation of the (Slide 1) Good day learners! This video lesson is
Lesson about finding the rate or percent in a given problem.

(Slide 2) Before we start, let’s be guided by our

objective for today’s lesson. Our objective is to find the
rate or percent in a given problem.

(Slide 3) But first, let’s define what is rate or percent.

(Slide 4) Percent comes from the Latin term “per

centum” which means per hundred. It is the ratio that
compares a number to one hundred. It can be
expressed as decimal and fraction.

(Slide 5) Could you still remember how to express

percent as decimal and fraction? Let’s have a brief
review by completing the following table by expressing
percent as decimal and fraction. The first is done for
you.

Did you get the right answers? Let’s check it out!

(Slide 6) The percent form of zero point sixty-five is

sixty-five percent. Its fraction form is sixty-five over
one hundred or thirteen over twenty.

The percent form of thirteen over twenty-five is fifty-

two percent. Its decimal form is zero point fifty-two.

The decimal form of eighty-seven percent is zero point

eighty-seven. Its fraction form is eighty-seven over one
hundred.

Well done! Just remember the following when
expressing percent as decimal and fraction:
(Slide 7)
 To write percent as decimal: Write as a fraction
with denominator of one hundred. Divide the
number by one hundred by moving the decimal
point two places to the left and drop the percent
sign.
(Slide 8)
 To write decimal to percent: Move the decimal
point two places to the right and write the
percent sign.
(Slide 9)
 To write percent as a fraction:
1. Use the ratio n over one hundred, where n is
the given percent.
2. Write in lowest term if needed.
(Slide 10)
 To write fractions as percent:
Write an equivalent fraction with a denominator
of one hundred. Or think of a number that,
when multiplied by the denominator will result
to one hundred. Multiply the same number by
the numerator. Then, write as percent.

Lesson Proper (Slide 11) Now, you are ready to find rate or percent in
a given problem. But before we proceed, let’s define
the following important terms:

Percentage (P) - It is the number or the amount that

represents a part of the whole.

(Slide 12)
Rate (R) - It is the number that compares to 100. It
usually has either a percent sign (%) or the word
“percent” with it.

(Slide 13)
Base (B) - It is the number that represents the whole
or the entire amount.

(Slide 14)
It is also important to remember the triangle method
formula. The triangle can help you remember the
formulas for finding the percentage, the rate, and the
base.

To find the percentage (P) cover (P); since R and B are

next to each other, it means multiplication. Percentage
is equal to rate times base. To find the base (B) cover
B; since P is over, it means division. So, base is equal
to percentage divided by rate. And to find the rate (R)
cover R; since P is over, it means division. Rate is
equal to percentage divided by base.

(Slide 15) Now, we are already set. So, let’s find the
rate or percent in a given problem.

Example1
What percent of 50 is 35?

To find what percent of 50 is 35, we will use the

formula, rate is equal to percentage divided by base.

(Slide 16) Given: percentage is equal to 35; base is

equal to 50
Find the rate R
Solution:
Rate is equal to percentage divided by base
Rate is equal to thirty-five divided by fifty. The answer
is zero point seven or seven tenths.
Move the decimal point 2 places to the right, add zero,
and write the percent sign. Rate is equal to seventy
percent.

Therefore, 70% of 50 is 35.

(Slide 17) Example 2

Fourteen (14) is what percent of 60?

To find what percent of 60 is 14, we will use the

formula, rate is equal to percentage divided by base.

(Slide 18) Given: percentage is equal to 14; base is

equal to 60
Find the rate R
Solution:
Rate is equal to percentage divided by base. Rate is
equal to fourteen divided by sixty. The answer is zero
point two three three or two hundred thirty-three
thousandths.
Move the decimal place 2 places to the right and put a
percent sign. Rate is equal to twenty-three-point three
percent.

Therefore, 14 is 23.3% of 60.

(Slide 19) Example 3

If N times 160 is equal to 136, find N

To find N, we will use the formula, rate is equal to

percentage divided by base.

(Slide 20) Given: percentage is equal to one hundred

thirty-six; base is equal to one hundred sixty.
Find the rate N
Solution:
Rate is equal to percentage divided by base
Rate is equal to one hundred thirty-six divided by one
hundred sixty. The answer is zero point eighty-five or
eighty-five hundredths.
Move the decimal place 2 places to the right and put a
percent sign. Rate is equal to eighty-five percent.

Therefore, N is equal to 0.85 or 85%. Thus, 0.85 times

160 = 136

Abstraction (Slide 21) Let’s have a recap of what we have learned

today.
