Topic Title

A FRACTION, DECIMAL AND PERCENTAGE

Decimals, Fractions and Percentages are just different ways of showing the same value.

EXAMPLE
Content:
A Half can be written...
1
As a fraction: /2
As a decimal: 0.5
As a percentage: 50%

Concept Notes

A. Expressing Fractions to Decimals and to Percent Form.

Fractions and decimal numbers are simply two different ways of representing numbers that
are less than one. Since any number below one can be represented with either a fraction or a
decimal, there are specific mathematics equations that allow you to figure out what the
equivalent of a fraction would be in decimal form, and percent and vice versa.
To express fractions to decimals and to percent form, divide the numerator by the
denominator of the fraction and multiply the result by 100 and attach the % symbol.
1 = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125 x 100% = 12.5%
8
25 = 25 ÷ 50 = 0.5 x 100% = 50%
50
75 = 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75 x 100% = 75%
100

B. Expressing decimals to fractions and percent forms.

- Decimals do not use a slash to indicate what part of the whole they represent. Instead, the
decimal point to the left of the numbers signifies that the numbers are below one. With a
decimal, the whole is considered to be based on 10, 100, 1000, etc, depending on how many
spaces to the right of the decimal the number goes.
To express decimals to fractions and percent forms,
1. rewrite the decimal number over one (as a fraction where the decimal number is numerator
and the denominator is one).
2. Multiply both the numerator and the denominator by 10 to the power of the number of digits
after the decimal point. If there is one value after the decimal, multiply by 10, if there are two
then multiply by 100, if there are three then multiply by 1,000, etc.
3. Express the fraction in simplest (or reduced form).

To percent form
- multiply the decimal by 100 and attach the percent symbol.

1) 0.75 = 75 ÷ 25 = 3 (25 is the GCF- greatest common factor of 75 and 100)

100 25 4
=0.75 x 100% = 75%
2) 0.6 = 6 ÷ 2 = 3/5 (2 is the GCF of 6 and 10).
10 2
= 0.6 x 100% = 60%
3) 0 .5 = 5 = 5 ÷ 5 = 1/2 (5 is the GCF of 5 and 10).
10 10 5
=0.5 x 100% = 50%

C. Expressing percent to fractions and decimal forms.

To express the percentage to a fraction, put the percentage number over a

denominator of 100.
To decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator of the fraction.

Examples
1. 20% = 20 ÷ 20 = 1/5 (20 is the GCF of 20 and 100)
100 20
So, 1/5 = 0.2

2. 50% = 50 ÷ 50 = 1/2 (50 is the GCF of 50 and 100)

100 50
So, 1/5 = 0.5

3. 75% = 75 ÷ 25 = 1/3 (25 is the GCF of 75 and 100)

100 25
So, 1/5 = 0.2
