Job Application Form

Hi, I’m Taylor of About.com and today I’ll be showing you how to complete a job application
form, any additional materials you may need and some tips on how to use proper handwriting. I’ll
be using the instructions from www.About.com’s job application site.
It’s very important that your application is correct, accurate and complete. Since you’re
going to be asked about your previous education and employment history, take the time to find out
any names, addresses, phone numbers, and dates of employment before 1 _________ the
application. Have at least three 2_____________ available. Make sure you have their permission
before using them as a reference. These people can be teachers, members of an organization you
volunteered for, or previous employers. Don’t use family members though.
Using blue or black ink, fill up your personal information like your name, 3____________
and phone number. When writing, leave enough space between each letter, so the words are easily
legible. Be conscious of how much space you are given, so don’t write too big or too small.
In the Education section, write down the most recent year of education first, include

3. Collocations
A. Work with a partner. Read the text and answer the questions below.

What is a collocation?
A collocation is a pair or group of words that are often used together. These combinations sound
natural to native speakers, but students of English have to make a special effort to learn them
because they are often difficult to guess.

Some combinations just sound ‘wrong’ to native speakers of English. For example, the adjective
fast collocates with cars and food but not with a glance or a meal. Learning collocations is an
important part of learning the vocabulary of a language.

Some collocations are fixed, or very strong, for example, take a photo, where no word other than
take collocates with photo to give the same meaning. Some collocations are more open, where
different words may be used to give a similar meaning, for example, keep to / stick to the rules.
Here are some more examples of collocations.

• You must make an effort and study for your exams (NOT do an effort)
• Did you watch TV last night? (NOT look at TV)
• This car has a very powerful engine. It can do 200 km an hour. (NOT strong engine)
• There are some ancient monuments nearby. (NOT antique monuments)

Sometimes, a pair of words may not be wrong, and people will understand what is meant, but it
may not be the natural, normal collocation. If someone says I did a few mistakes, they will be
understood, but a fluent speaker of English would probably say I made a few mistakes.

Idioms are expressions whose meanings are different from the words that make them.
Understanding an idiom requires some other knowledge than knowing the words used. Idioms
normally cannot be modified or the words within them changed.

Prepositional Phrases:
They consist of a preposition and the words which follow it (a complement).

A. Modern technology is changing the way we live our lives. Clever gadgets make everyday activities easier and

The Experience of a Lifetime!


I studied engineering at UASLP. When I graduated, I decided to learn a foreign language. 1 _________because I
heard many people around the world speak English, so I thought it would be useful.
A friend who was a student at Cambridge University recommended that I study English there. An important
part of the course involved studying abroad. Well, at first, I didn’t really know which country to go to, but one
day 2_________. It looked like a great place to visit, so that’s where I went!
When I got to Cambridge, I was nervous because it was my first time abroad on my own. However, everyone at
the college was really friendly and welcoming.
On weekends, they took me and the other new students to visit a lot of fun places. They also organized activities
so we could meet the local people. Our English teacher was really good, too. I was only there for three months,
but I learned a lot.
Afterwards, I went back to Mexico and immediately started investigating other study-abroad options. This time

Riding a bike in the most dangerous road in the world


High in the Andes, the North Yungas Road goes from la Paz, the highest capital city in the world, to Coroico in
the Yungas region of Bolivia. The road is only about ten feet wide and the Coroico River is 656 feet below.
Bolivians call it “El Camino de la Muerte” (Death Road) because of the number of accidents, and in 1995 it was
officially declared “the most dangerous road in the world”.

1.2. Evaluación formativa


A lo largo del curso, el profesor brindará retroalimentación oportuna a los estudiantes para
potenciar su avance, en función de las actividades programadas. Los profesores deben utilizar
instrumentos diversificados, según el objetivo de aprendizaje buscado y además promoverán la
autoevaluación y la coevaluación. Los siguientes elementos son elementos centrales de apoyo para
la evaluación formativa:

Portafolio de evidencias
El portafolio de evidencias de aprendizaje puede contener: apuntes de clase, cuaderno de trabajo
DUI, hojas de trabajo, una selección de tareas y actividades tales como rubricas de exposiciones
orales, proyectos, ejercicios de redacción, debidamente revisadas y que cumplan con los objetivos
de la unidad.

El portafolio de evidencias debe contener al menos el 50% de actividades que el maestro haya
planteado previamente, incluyendo como mínimo 2 actividades sugeridas en esta guía didáctica y
cuaderno de trabajo.

Job Interview: El alumno graba en pares un video aproximadamente de 5 minutos
