1. How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

3. Do you think New Year’s resolutions are a
good idea? Why or Why not?
(69)

G. Read the text.

Celebrating the New Year

The start of the New Year on January 1st is a popular time for celebrating. Celebrations can start early
on New Year’s Eve, December 31st, as people meet up with friends and family members. Many people
have a drink in a pub or go to a special party in someone’s home. People hope to start the New Year
with good intentions so they make some resolutions to help them have a successful year.
Here are young people talking about their plans for New Year’s Eve and about their new year’s
resolutions:
Ben 16, Brighton
I’m going to my parents in a “New Year’s Day Swim” this year. It’s freezing cold in the water but is a
fun way to start the year. A lot of people meet on Brighton Beach for this first swim of the year. I hope
it doesn’t snow. I won’t be out partying the night before, because I don’t like all the noise and drinking!
My family and I usually have a quiet evening and watch the celebrations on TV.
My resolutions:
I am doing volunteer work in my area. I will be nicer to my girlfriend. I’ll get better grades.
Sophie 18, Newcastle Upon Tyne
I’m going to the center of Newcastle with my cousin and friends on New Year’s Eve. I love being in a
crowd when the clocks strike midnight. This is the first New Year’s Eve in the streets because I was
too young last year. We will probably get back home at four or five in the morning.
My resolutions:
I’ll learn how to play the guitar and talk less in class! I’ll study hard to get good grades for university.

H. Read the text again and circle T for true of F for false.

2. People visit Brighton Beach only in December. T F
3. Ben’s family likes to party all night. T F

Surveys show that children are addicted to their smart phones and other gadgets. It seems as if
teenagers are spending a lot of time connected to their screens, that’s because they are connected
about a quarter of their day to be exact.
The average teen between 13 and 18 spends about nine hours a day consuming media – and that is
outside of their school and homework. Children aged 8 to 12, are spending about six hours in front of
the screens. They are watching shows, playing games, connecting on social media and listening to
music – sometimes all at the same time.
Multitasking is the new normal when it comes to homework time. Most teens listen to music while
doing their homework, but many also watch TV (51%) and text (60%). Being asked teenagers say they
don’t think it is a problem and don’t believe it has any impact on the quality of their work. However,
there is evidence that suggests multitasking makes it harder to retain information and that you might
perform poorly on the tasks you are doing.
Another fact surveys find is that it seems children spend more time consuming media than connecting
with their parents and even their teachers.

1. Children spend a quarter of their day connected to their _______________

2. Children’s age that spends six hours a day connected in different tasks: __________
3. Children combine doing homework with: _______________
4. Now is more difficult to remember _______________when children do different

5. Children spend less time with their ____________________ than with the media.

E. Read the text.

The innovative woman who created every UK road sign.

Driving on any road, you will immediately encounter the green

and blue signs, or the red-bordered circles and triangles with their
black silhouetted figures. Margaret Calvert designed all of these
signs in the sixties.
She was born in South Africa in 1936. She moved to Britain as a
teenager and went on to study at the Chelsea College of Art.
There, she met tutor and designer Jock Kinneir. In 1957, Kinneir
won the commission to design the signs for the new Gatwick Airport and he hired Calvert as
his assistant.
The Fifties were a boom time for Britain’s roads: more people were driving and there were
many new road symbol signs. However, the signage was a mess – there was a mismatch of
signs with no consistency. When Kinneir was selected head of signs for Britain’s roads, Calvert
joined his team. Together they created a system of shapes, colors and typefaces (fonts).
Calvert was specifically in charge of the human and animal images and came up
with a now iconic set of simple black pictograms on white backgrounds for hazards
such as “farm animals” and “school crossing”. The picture of a girl leading a small
boy by the hand was based on a photo of herself as a child.
Over the next 20 years, Kinneir Calvert Associates created designs for institutions
including British Rail, and the army. Calvert created an eponymous typeface,
‘Calvert’, and took up teaching the next generation until 1991.The innovative designs she
helped to create changed the face of the country forever.

5. First Conditional
A. Read the following facts.
Scientists say that in the future there will be more storms heatwaves, droughts, rain, floods and
more hurricanes if we don’t do something about the climate change.
If people continue burning oil, coal or gas, the climate will change and
temperatures will go up several degrees. As a result, the ice and snow at
the north and south poles will melt and the sea levels will rise. If more
places become hotter, there will be more mosquitos that can affect our
health.

If people send more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse

gases into the atmosphere, the sea will become more ‘acid’
affecting our eco-systems. It will also affect our water, our food ,
our health and our economies.

If the seawater becomes warmer and polluted, many species of

fish will die out and the ones that are left will be smaller. If there
aren’t many fish in the ocean, it will be more expensive to eat fish! Our diet may have to change.

We need to act as soon as we can before it’s too late! What are you doing about it?

8. Natural Disasters News

A. Read the following news about an earthquake.

Mexico´s Earthquake Kills Many People

A powerful earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday afternoon, toppling buildings, killing children
in a school that collapsed, rattling the capital and sending people flooding into the streets for the
second time in just two weeks.
The earthquake hit shortly after 1 p.m. about 100 miles from Mexico City. It registered a
preliminary magnitude of 7.1, causing heavy and prolonged shaking in the capital.
Tuesday’s earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of another major disaster: the 1985
quake that killed as many as 10,000 people in Mexico.
It also came less than two weeks after the most powerful earthquake
in Mexico in a century, an 8.1 magnitude quake that killed at least 90
people, destroyed thousands of homes and was felt by tens of millions of
people.
Paul Earle, a seismologist with the United States Geological Survey,
said it was too early to say whether there was any connection between
the two quakes. Although the first was much stronger, the one on
Tuesday was much closer to Mexico City, causing more damage in the
capital.
Residents in Mexico City, having just experienced shaking from that
quake, said the tremors on Tuesday were far worse.
