Subject: Problem of Roadside Dwellers.
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to bring to the
notice of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the problems caused and faced by
roadside dwellers.
X
A major problem faced by these people and by the residents of the area is that the
temporary settlements, in the form of ‘Jhuggis’, occupies most of the space on the
footpaths and hampers movement. In the absence of facilities, all the garbage
lies next to their tents, providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacterial
diseases. Dengue cases have increased drastically and the smell of rotting garbage
and human waste is unbearable. These people have not been provided with basic
requirements like clean drinking water, electricity or a more permanent settlement.
Recently, the street lights were not working and a child lost his life when hit by a car
while playing on the road.
X
Such instances spoil the image of our city and solutions are required immediately.
These dwellers should be provided with permanent places to live comfortably with
electricity, water supply and proper sanitation. I hope my letter reaches the
concerned Municipal authorities after it is published in your newspaper and civic and
bureaucratic action is swift and decisive.
X
Yours sincerely

22 February 2023, New Delhi: 20 persons succumbed to burn injuries and over 100
shops were completely gutted in a fire that broke out in Chandni Chowk in old Delhi
late last evening. Most of the shops dealt with readymade garments. At the time of
the accident, there were close to 50 people working in these shops. When the fire
started, those who were working in the upper floors of the shops, were trapped and
could not escape in time.

15 people were rushed to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. The fire
was brought under control after almost two hours. Sources in the Fire Department
told the press that the cause of the fire was most likely a short circuit in one of the
shops. The ACP (North) said, “We do not rule out the possibility of foul play. All leads

Q1. ‘Grow more trees to reduce pollution.’ Write an article in 120-150 words on the
topic given above for your school magazine.

Grow More Trees to Reduce Pollution

by XYZ

Trees and plants are one of the main reasons why mankind came into existence. The
importance of planting trees has been emphasized time and again. This is because of
the numerous benefits they offer. They make the world a better place to live in. They
exhale oxygen and inhale carbon dioxide to maintain the ecological balance in the
environment. They also absorb all the harmful gases and give us fresh air to breathe.
X
Trees build a sheet to protect us from the harmful ultraviolet rays. Not only this, they
serve as a habitat for birds and various species of animals. This is not it. Trees help in
controlling water pollution and preventing soil erosion. The places inhabited by large
numbers of trees are quite cooler compared to the concrete jungles that cannot do
without air conditioners.
X
Unfortunately, urbanisation is leading to clearing of forests and parks despite the
numerous benefits they offer. People come here for morning walks, evening strolls,
yoga sessions and laughter therapy. These also serve as a safe place for the kids to
play and socialise. The only way left to preserve them and reap these benefits is by
growing them at a faster rate.
X
As a Chinese proverb states, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The
second best time is now.” So let’s do our bit and make earth more beautiful.
Q2. India is a land of diversity. One way in which it makes us feel proud of it is the
number of festivals we enjoy. Write an article in 120-150 words on ‘Festivals of
India’. You are Karuna/Karan. (5)

Festivals of India
By Karuna
X
It is said that “Greatness of a culture can be found in its festivals”. India has proved
every word of the saying right by being famously known as the “Land of Festivals”.
True to this belief, India has scores and scores of festivals that bring happiness and
joy all across the country. This is because of the diverse cultures that exist in this
subcontinent. All these different cultures and religions get tied together in bonds of
love with these invisible threads of celebrations.
X
Every festival has a social, religious and mythological value. Festivals like Dussehra,
Janmashtami, Holi etc have a great religious and social significance. Apart from the
usual celebrations and prayers, they symbolize the destruction of evil and how truth
and goodness shall always prevail.
X
On most festivals in India, people offer prayers to their deities, wear ethnic clothes
and celebrate with their near and dear ones. Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid Ul Fitr, Baisakhi,
Onam, Pongal, Gurupurab, Ram Navami and Durga Puja are some of the festivals that
are celebrated with immense zeal in different parts of India with some of these being
specific to particular regions. No wonder, our country is called a land of festivals!
