LAS 3: ICT and Assessment of Learning

Activity A. Reflection: Formative and Summative Assessment

Since assessment establishes whether or not educational objectives are being reached, it
is a crucial component of instruction. Grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs,
curriculum, and, in some situations, funding decisions are influenced by assessments. The two
most common assessments used in the classroom are formative assessment and summative
assessment.

In a formative assessment, pupils are evaluated based on where they are in their learning.
It is a technique of giving pupils improved practice and detailed feedback. It aids teachers in
determining where the students stand academically, where they need to go, and the most
effective ways of getting there. It’s like looking inside a student’s head to determine what’s
happening, and then modifying the curriculum to help them achieve their goals. In order to
support the students’ metacognitive reflection on their learning. Also, it aids in students’ learning
engagement and goals. Students be able to practice and get feedback during formative
assessment without worrying about their grades. It is concerning what they comprehend.

Without formative assessment, teaching is akin to do so in the dark. Indeed, the moist
successful method of differentiation in the classroom is through formative evaluation. If we
didn’t adopt our5 instruction in response to the date from formative assessments, we would just
be guessing about what the kids had learned.

Summative assessment, on the other hand, is more likely to be carried out following a
change in practice skills and comprehension. In other words, rather of checking during lessons, it
is taken after a longer series of lessons. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student
learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Typically, a summative assessment has a grade. Examples are tests, projects/group projects, or
assessment.

Formative assessment put students at the center of their learning so that they can do as
well as possible on the summative assessment.
