Chapter 11 Activity
(10 points)

Find and compare traditional smoking/tobacco advertisements and newer “truth”

advertisements about the dangers of smoking/tobacco. Evaluate the utility of both types
of advertisements. Are these advertisements effective in making smoking/tobacco look
enticing or attractive to elementary-aged students? Are the truth ads effective in
deterring elementary aged students from smoking? If available, ask elementary-aged
children for their opinions. Submit both advertisements with your response.

According to the CDC traditional smoking/tobacco advertisements have scientific

evidence that shows tobacco company advertising and promotion influences young
people to start using tobacco. Further, youth and young adults who are exposed to
cigarette advertising often find the ads appealing. Even further, youth and young adults
Tobacco ads make smoking appear to be appealing, which can increase adolescents’
desire to smoke and youth’s desire in the future (CDC, 2021). The _ article acknowledges
every day, close to 100 kids and teens who had previously been occasional cigarette
smokers become regular daily cigarette smokers. Further, it acknowledges big Tobacco
pushes their message by placing ads—big ones—in magazines and publications that are
popular with kids. The more exposure adolescents and teens have to tobacco advertising,
the more likely they are to start smoking (Association, 2023). Evidently traditional
smoking tobacco advertisements has influenced children for generations and still does
today in the form of e-cigarettes with different flavors.

The truth initiative ads positively highlight the decrease numbers in smoking. In the one
demonstrated down below it highlights the number in teens smoking from the 2000s to
now is down by 14 percent. Further, the truth initiative highlights, vaping prevention
curriculum on their website, articles, and through ads. Through truth it highlights the
available tools, resources, and public education and prevention efforts, truth delivers the
facts about smoking, vaping, and nicotine use, exposes the tactics of the tobacco industry,
and helps young people make informed choices and influence their peers to do the same
(Truth).

Once asking the 4th grade students in my school their opinions on smoking a lot of them
are quick to say smoking is bad. This is due to the fact that community police
enforcement come to the building and run the D.A.R.E. program, which is an educational
program that teaches students about the dangers of drugs & violence. Evidently from my
experience working with children many do not experience usage of tobacco products
until the secondary level.
