Chapter 6 Activity
(10 points)

At the end of the chapter, choose one of the strategies (health behavioral objective,
HBO) for promoting healthy eating. Identify the functional knowledge children would
need regarding this strategy, and describe which skill-based standards (National
Health Education Standards, NHES) they would emphasize in order to help children
develop the related skills in order to practice the healthy eating behavior. Provide
clear and concise detail.

The healthy behavioral objective I selected was HBO #5, which states, “drinking plenty

of water daily.” The functional knowledge children would need to understand regarding

this strategy is the benefits and factors associated with drinking the appropriate amount of

water a day. When children do not drink enough water, they are more at risk for

dehydration, leading to muscle cramps, dizziness, light-headedness, headache, tiredness,

dry mouth, lips, and eyes. Even more complex complications from not drinking enough

water can lead to seizures, brain swelling, kidney failure, shock, coma, and even death

(Water and healthier drinks, 2022). The benefits of drinking water include supporting

the function of your cells and organs, regulating body temperature, keeping your skin

healthy, boosting alertness, supporting brain function, and aiding digestion (Water and

healthier drinks, 2022). On average, the following ages should consume the following

amount of water daily 4 to 8 years old: five 8-ounce cups. 9 to 13 years old: five to six 8-

ounce cups. 14 to 18 years old: six to eight 8-ounce cups (Hydration tips for children,

2022). Lastly, the skill-based standards are emphasized to help children develop these

related skills and knowledge to practice healthy daily water intake is HE1.2.4 Identify the

benefits of drinking plenty of water. (HBO 5 & 12), HE1.5.6 describes the benefits of
drinking plenty of water. (HBO 5, 12 & 13), HE1.8.11 Summarize the benefits of

drinking plenty of water. (HBO 5 & 13).
