What key insight did you take away from the last two lessons?

I never realized how addictive tobacco/nicotine really was until we went very in-depth
for this lesson. What I took away is the danger of vaping for those who don’t start off smoking. I
see vaping more as a tool for those trying to lessen their nicotine/tobacco use. I also saw more of
the capitalist sides of cigarette use and the companies benefitting off of people’s addictions.

What local community resources are available to combat tobacco use? Identify at least five
community resources—not smoking cessation products. For each organization or entity,

groups help them to develop a personalized quit plan, education on the harms associated with
nicotine and smoking, stress management for withdrawal symptoms, and free nicotine
replacement therapy.

According to the World Health Organization, between 80,000 and 100,000 kids around the
world begin smoking each day. 90% of smokers today started before the age of 18. In the
United States alone, 3,200 young people smoke their first cigarette before the age of 12–17.
 In one short paragraph, give your best explanation of these statistics.
According to these statistics, close to 100,000 youth begin smoking each day. I believe
this high statistic is due to environments around children and not enough education surrounding
tobacco use. So, when kids are peer pressured into trying a cigarette, since they don’t see any
harm in it, they smoke which ends up leading to an addiction.

 Research and discuss one or two ideas that you can do to help change these statistics.
I think we can help to educate the youth of America better about the dangers of smoking.
As a kid, we had our health nurse come in and teach us about tobacco every school year, and I
remember seeing what black tar looked like and hearing how that is in cigarettes, seeing that
made me never want to smoke a cigarette in my life. I think we need to educate younger children
more about the dangers of smoking through in-class school programs.
