Whole Foods (America)
Turning organic food waste and
biodegradable packaging into tightly
packed composting, utilizing aerobic
processes and decomposition (Uncle Jim’s
Worm Farm, 2016).
The general public can dispose of their
waste in designated bins in store which is
then given to farmers and agriculturists to
use as compost (Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm,
2016).
The program is free to use for the public
however the price the farmers/
agriculturists pay is not made public (Uncle
Jim’s Worm Farm, 2016).
Only the farmers and agriculturists that
supply Whole Foods can use the compost
(Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm, 2016).
Also decomposes and composts cardboard
and biodegradable packaging (Uncle Jim’s
Worm Farm, 2016).
Example 2
Coles
Food close to expiry or unfit for sale is
sent to charities such as Foodbank and
Secondbite to be processed into meals
for those in need (Coles, 2023).
Charities, homeless and low-income
earners can all access the program
through the charities listed above
(Coles, 2023).
The service is free of charge, and
anyone can access it (Coles, 2023).
People in rural areas may be too far to
access the programs. This information
may also not be public knowledge so
those who don’t know could miss out.
Example 3
Woolworths
Organic waste is provided to farmers to
then give to their animals for a more
budget friendly feed (Woolworths,
2023a).
Farmers and Agriculturists have access
to this program as long as they are
located near a local Woolworths and
contact them directly (Woolworths,
2023a).
The feed is given away at a discounted
price and is less expensive than
traditional animal feed however, this
price is not available to the public
(Woolworths, 2023a).
Farmers or agriculturists that are too far
from a Woolworths store cannot be in
the program.
