Chapter 1 Study Guide 1-20

1. The ability to utilize digital technology, including computers, mobile devices, software, and the
Internet, effectively is referred to as digital literacy. Understanding how to locate, assess,
produce, and transmit information and ideas using digital tool s, as well as how to safeguard
personal information and utilize digital technology safely and ethically, is referred to as digital
literacy.
2. A computer is an electronic device with data processing, storage, and output capabilities. It is
capable of a wide range of tasks, including word processing, online surfing, gaming, and
multimedia creation. There are many different types of computers, including desktops, laptops,
tablets, and smartphones. The term "hardware" describes the actual hardware, such as the CPU,
memory, storage devices, input/output devices, and networking components, that make up a
computer or other electronic device. Hardware is the tangible portion of a computer system and
is necessary for its operation and performance. A person who uses a computer or another
electronic device to carry out activities or obtain information is known as a user. Users can
utilize a computer system in a variety of ways, such as via a keyboard, mouse, touch screen,
voice recognition, or any combination of those.
3. A PC is a desktop computer that may be utilized at a workstation or desk. The essential parts,
including the motherboard, CPU, memory, storage devices, and power supply, are often housed
in a tower or casing. For input and output, a PC typically includes a separate display, keyboard,
and mouse. A mobile computer, on the other hand, is made to be portable and usable when
traveling. Examples of mobile computers include laptops, tablets, and smartphones. These
devices are smaller and lighter than PCs and are meant to be battery-powered. Usually, they
have built-in touchscreens, touchpads, and displays for input and output.
4. A tablet is a specific form of mobile computer intended to be portable and practical to use. Its
touchscreen interface and absence of a physical keyboard define it as being bigger than a
smartphone but smaller than a laptop. Some screen gesture you can do are. Tap, Touch the
screen quickly and release to activate a button, select an item, or open an app. Swipe, Drag your
finger across the screen to scroll up or down, left, or right, or switch between apps. Pinch, Use
two fingers to pinch the screen together or apart to zoom in or out on a map, photo, or
webpage.
5. Traditionally speaking, a desktop computer is a tower-style computer with a separate computer
casing and display. The display is often separate from the computer casing and is connected to it
using a wire. An all-in-one computer, on the other hand, integrates the display and computer
parts into a single unit. While they often have fewer wires and components to manage than a
desktop computer, all-in-ones are intended to conserve space and make setup easier. The
primary screen or backdrop picture of a computer's graphical user interface are also included in
the definition of "desktop" (GUI). Icons, shortcuts, and widgets for accessing applications and
files are displayed on this screen, which appears once a person enters in to their computer.
6. A computer system that serves other computers or devices on a network is known as a server. A
wide range of services, including file storage, email, web hosting, database administration, and
others, can be offered by servers. The particular services that a server offers are determined by
its setup and function.
7. Yes, a mobile device is a type of computer. While it may not have the same processing power or
capabilities as a traditional desktop or laptop computer, it still has a CPU, memory, storage, and
an operating system that allows it to run applications and perform a variety of functions.
8. Some common characteristics of smartphones include: Touchscreen display, Wireless
connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular data), Camera, GPS and location services, Operating
system with access to an app store, Ability to make phone calls and send text messages.
9. Voice message is an audio recording of a spoken message sent via a messaging app or service.
Text message is a written message sent via SMS or a messaging app. Picture message is an image
or photo sent via MMS or a messaging app, Video message is a video recording sent via MMS or
a messaging app.
10. Digital cameras: Used for taking photos and recording videos.
Portable and digital media players: Used for playing music, videos, and other media files.
E-book readers: Used for reading electronic books and other digital content.
Wearable devices: Used for tracking fitness and health metrics, receiving notifications, and
performing other tasks via a small device worn on the body.
Game devices: Used for playing video games.
11. Convergence in digital devices is the process of integrating several features and functionalities
into a single device. Mobile electronics, like smartphones and tablets, which combine
functionality like cameras, GPS, music players, and more into a single device, are a good
example of this trend.
12. With the use of voice commands or mobile devices, homeowners may use home automation
technology to manage a number of features of their property, including lighting, temperature,
and security. Smart security systems, smart lighting systems, and smart thermostats are a few
examples of home automation technologies.
13. Data refers to raw facts and figures, while information is data that has been processed and
organized to provide meaning and context. For example, a list of numbers would be considered
data, while a chart or graph created from those numbers would be considered information.
14. Entering information or commands into a computer or other device is referred to as input.
Output refers to the process of showing or providing facts or information to the user. Mice,
keyboards, mice, touchscreens, and other input devices are examples. Speakers, projectors,
printers, and monitors are a few examples of output devices.
15. A pointing device is an input device used to move a cursor or pointer on a computer screen.
Examples of pointing devices include mice, touchpads, and trackballs.
16. Microphone, input device for voice, Webcam, input device for video, Speakers or headphones,
output devices for voice and video, Display or monitor, output device for video
17. Memory is the temporary storage area on the computer utilized for processing data and actively
running applications. When the computer is turned off, it is normally cleaned in the form of
RAM (Random Access Memory). A hard drive, solid-state drive (SSD), or external storage device
are examples of long-term data storage methods. Storage, on the other hand, describes this
type of data storage.
18. Hard drives, internal storage devices that use magnetic disks to store data, Solid-state drives
(SSDs), internal or external storage devices that use flash memory to store data, USB flash
drives, small external storage devices that can be easily transported and plugged into computers
or other devices, SD cards, small memory cards often used in cameras, smartphones, and other
portable devices
19. The term "cloud storage" refers to a service offered by businesses that enables customers to
store and access data and files online as opposed to on their personal computer or local
network. The services that cloud storage companies may provide range from: Storage space,
sizes vary between free and premium storage options, Automated file backup and
synchronization between devices, Anyone with an internet connection can access data,
Collaboration tools for collaborating on files with others and sharing them.
20. In comparison to back up plans for personal computers, backup plans for mobile devices may
rely more largely on cloud storage and may need to be modified in accordance with the device's
available storage space and connectivity choices. Parts of a backup plan might consist of:
Regularly scheduled data backups to a cloud storage provider or an external hard drive, storing
several copies of crucial documents in various places, routinely checking backups to make sure
data can be correctly restored.
