FIRST ACT
SCENE
Morning-room in Algernon’s flat in Half-Moon Street. The room is luxuriously and
artistically furnished. The sound of a piano is heard in the adjoining room.
[Lane is arranging afternoon tea on the table, and after the music has
ceased, Algernon enters.]
Algernon. Did you hear what I was playing, Lane?
Lane. I didn’t think it polite to listen, sir.
Algernon. I’m sorry for that, for your sake. I don’t play accurately—any one can play
accurately—but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned,
sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life.
Lane. Yes, sir.

HISTORY OF TRANSLATION
The House of Wisdom
TYPES OF TRANSLATION
The Middle Ages “translating” and “glossing”, whereas Roman Culture thought of
translation and imitation (translation imitation)
Translating more like the meaning and glossing like word by word.
Renaissance
The French humanist Étienne Dolet, translated a text from Platoon, imprisoned and sent
to death.
William translated the bible.
Germany, Martin Luther translated the bible in German. Beginning of Modern German.
So people could read the bible.
Towards the middle of the 17th century the metaphor of fidelity appeared: “the Belles
infidèls” as Gilles Ménage said about a translation BY Perrot d’Ablancout. D’Ablancout
John Denham.
Pierre-Daniele Huet he said that the translator should be like a camaleon, should be
able to change in different styles, that’s why very famous writers. Our writer works in
his world, language and it is difficult to become someone else.
In England, John Dryden, poet. There was the beginning of books that were specialzed
on author.
Three translation process:
Metaphrase, word by word and line by line.
Paraphrase, sense for sense
Imitation, changing words and even sense if the translation requires it.
Translation Practice
1. Hacia 1562. Óleo sobre table, 116 x 191 cm
Painted for the base of the main altarpiece of Saint Stephen, in Valencia, next to the
paintings of San Esteban’s life. Inspired in Leonardo, both in terms of space and the
eloquent expressiveness of the apostles, it also shows the thin relation between Juanes
and Rafael. Following the traditional iconography of the peninsula, the valencian
painter focused the scene on Jesus, serene and triumphant, at the moment of the
consecration of the holy host. The chalice which appears on the centre of the table
reproduces the one that is stored in the cathedral of Valencia, considered the authentic
glass used by Jesus Christ in The Last Supper. The jug and the basin in the foreground
allude to the washing of feet, prior supper. All the apostles wear a halo with their name
except Judas Iscariot, whose name appears on the bench where he sits. His beard and
hair are red, and, according to the tradition, wears yellow, the colour that symbolizes
envy and hides a bag of money from his companions.
2. Óleo sobre lienzo, 81,5 x 108 cm.
The rich and diversified chromatism and the lightning that contributes to provoke
chiaroscuro effects are the circumstances that denote and reinforce the mastery of the
artist when it comes to differentiate the edible tactile qualities, that result easily
identified in all its suggestive dimension of its characteristics, as a testimony of the
attractive aspects of the overview of sweets in our own food of Spanish traditions.

Herder
Schopenhauer, when you translate, first is melted down and then it is recasted.
19th Century we have Shleiermacher, German writer and translator, and he translated the
bible, he thought it depends, we can use different techniques for different texts. Harnol
vs. Newman translators, controversy whether to translate word. Important thing of this
controversy is that it is the first-time style formed.
Walter Benjamin, writer and philosopher, trapped un Perpignan because we was
persecuted by the nazis because he was jew. He wrote a very influential word, the task
of the translator, problem sadly, the translation to Spanish was horrible.
20th century we move to Russia. They want to make a science of translation. In
university always had been translation.
You learn translating by translating, theory is ok but practice is the thing.
Nida was an author that translated the bible.
Text to translate:
Portús (2006) indicates that the coat of arms of Valencia appears in one of the waffle-
rolls and, the turrón in the lower left cornes of the canvas propose a Valencian origin for
this work, whose style and composition are characteristics of the early stage of the
production of Hiepes. Both form and description of the braid baskets, but also the role
played by the dark bottle in the composition, remind another painting of the author,
Bodegón de cocina, of similar details.
3.
Youth stabbed in Ciutat Meridiana
The deadly assault / fatal attack occurred on Saturday in a street fight.
A 23 young Dominican man was stabbed to death during the early hours of Saturday to
Sunday morning in a street fight in Ciutat Meridiana, Nou Barris district in Barcelona.
The four presumptuous aggressors, also of Dominican nationality, were arrested and
could be brought to court today, according what the Mossos d’Esquadra noted.
The incident took place in front of 126 Agudes street, around 3.17 am. Some local
residents alerted the police to the fight in the middle of the street, but when they arrived,
they only found a large pool of blood.

5.
THYME SOUP
L ½ pints of water
Slices of stale bread
A brunch of drifted thyme
Olive oil, salt
Bring the water to boil in a pot and when starts add the thyme. While the water is
boiling, place the thinly sliced bread on a plate, salt them and put oil on them. Don’t be
stingy with the oil. If you feel this is not enough, you can break a fresh egg on each
plate. When the thyme has infused for two or three minutes, pour the water – carefully if
you have put an egg – into each bowl of soup.
This is the simplest soup eaten mainly by shepherds but very useful as cure for a
hangover.

WEATHER IN EUROPE
Meteorology variable over much of western Europe, with fronts and troughs in many
areas.
In most of the United Kingdom will predominate clear skies, but in the eastern of
England there will be isolated showers; heavier rains (precipitations are expected) in the
north and west of Scotland and northern Ireland.
In the north of France and Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg will be dry
and occasionally sunny weather, but most of the continent will have rain, with snow at
higher altitudes.
In Mediterranean countries, will be hot weather, with sunny intervals, but also showers
and isolated stormy spells.
In British Islands, Scandinavia and in the north of Europe, tomorrow the sky will be
clear, condition that will persist until Monday, but later on the precipitations will spread
across the region.
in southern Europe and Mediterranean countries will be heavy cloudiness with
occasional precipitation (rainy intervals), but tomorrow in Spain and Portugal some
improvement will be observed, extending to most regions.
En frente = Outisde
Darse a la fuga = flee (by car)
Very often verbs like producirse (reproducirse) and registrarse which are relatively
empty verbs, can be translated into English as: there is/ are/ was / were / has been /
have been, etc. (i.e. existential there)
Examples:
- De momento no se han producido otras noticias // There is no more news for the
moment
- Se produjo un aumento de la delincuencia // There was an increase in crime
Examples (reproducirse):
- Se reprodujeron las violencias y los atentados // There was wenewed violence and
more murders // The violence and murdering was repeated
Example (registrar-se):
- La Guerra conitnúa: ayer se registraron nuevos conflictos // The war is still on:
yesterday there were further clashes
- El aeropuerto de Barcelona ha registrado un aumento del tráfico // There has ben an
increase in traffic at Barcelona Airport
Another stylistic difference btw English and Spanish is the question of how PATH and
MANNER are treated.
Verb-framed v. satellite-framed languages /Talmy)
English often expresses Path outside the verb e.g. He went in. It is called a satellite-
framed language
If Spanish adds Manner, it is often outside the verb e.g. Entró corriendo // Salió
disparado

No tienen entrañas, crueles,

BLANCHE: Stella, oh, Stella, ¡Stella!

Chick, no sabe si reír o llorar.
