Lesson aim
• In this lesson, students learn about the
development of sport in ancient times to find out
the origins of some of the modern-day sports
and sporting events, and where and why they
were played.
Lead-in
Talk about sports with the students. Discuss
which sports they enjoy playing and which they
aren’t so keen on. Do they favour team sports
or individual sports? Do they play any sports at
competition level? What sports do they enjoy
watching the most? Have they ever been to any live
sporting events?
1 In pairs, students look at the sports and decide
when they think they originated.

2 Students read the text and answer the question.

The first sport in Ancient Greece was probably
athletics in the form of gymnastics and running.
The Greeks would run races in honour of soldiers
who had died, which was at competitive level
and which then developed into competitions like
the Olympics.
Before reading the text again, write the words in the
Vocabulary focus box on the board and ask students
to find them in the text. Pre-teach some of the more
complex words if necessary.
3 Students read the text again in detail and decide
if the statements are true or false.

4 Focus students’ attention on the sports
mentioned in the text and ask them to scan the
text to find the correct answers. They then write
the correct numbers next to the sentences.

5 In pairs, students discuss the questions. Elicit
answers from the class and talk about their
thoughts on participating in sports.

PROJECT
6 In pairs, students choose a sport that interests
them and that they would like to research the
history of. Students do research in books or
online to find out about the sport. Encourage
students to use photos or illustrations where
possible to support their findings.
7 The pairs decide how best to present their
video recording and show the photos and/or
illustrations to the rest of the class. Allow some
class time for preparation and set deadlines for
students to record their information on video
and present it to the class.
