UNIT 13: THE 22nd SEA GAMES

I. OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

- Read for specific information in a text about the 22nd sea games;
- Give Vietnamese equivalents to words and phrases;
- Use the topic-related words in meaningful contexts

STAGE PROCEDURE TIME


WARM-UP The teacher lets the class play a game called: “catch the 5 minutes
word”
Rule: look at the picture then guess the keywords.

The teacher asks the students question:
Where did the 22nd SEA GAMES take place ?
Key: In Ha Noi
Lead-in: “Today we are going to read a passage about
the 22nd SEA GAMES. Now read the passage and find
out which countries took part in it, what kinds of sports
were played, and which country won first place.”

PRE-READING Presenting vocabulary: show the form and meaning of 10 minutes

1. Host /həʊst/ (v):
to provide the space and other
things necessary for a special event.
Ask the students to look at the picture on page
138 in their textbook, and tell the students that
the 22nd SEA GAMES were held in Ha Noi, Viet
Nam. So we can say Viet Nam hosted the 22nd
SEA GAMES.
Ask for the Vietnamese meaning of the two
words.
 Host(n): a country, a city, or an organization
that holds and arranges a special event.
Ex: Viet Nam was the host country for the 22nd
SEA GAMES.
2. Enthusiast /ɪnˈθjuːziæst/ (n): a person who is
very interested in something and spends a lot
of time doing it.
Ask one boy in the class(the boy in the corner of
the class) “what games do you love most?”,the
answer may vary. The teacher says: “ A is a
game enthusiast or a fan of games”.

3. Compete/kəmˈpiːt/(v): to try to be more

they doing. And then tell the students they are
competing in a swimming competition.

4. Energetic /ˌenəˈdʒetɪk/(a):
tell students a story “every morning,I
wake up early but I feel tired and
sleepy,then I drink some coffee or a can
of red bull then I feel energetic” by
doing some body movements.
Write the word, and its word class and stress on
the board.
Give some family words.

5. participate /pɑːˈtɪsɪpeɪt/(v): to take part in
or become involved in an activity.
Give the students the sentence “I take part in
an English competition” and ask them to give
the synonym of the word “take part in”
Write the word on the board.
Give some family words.

Ask the class to listen and repeat the words
on the board chorally and individually.

WHILE-READING Ask some students to read the passage and translate into 20 minutes
Vietnamese.
Do some activities in the text book:
Task 1: game: choose the correct word.
Rule: One team member comes to the board, listens to
the English word that the teacher calls, and then throws
the teddy bear to the correct Vietnamese meaning.

Task 2: scan the passage and complete each

Invite some students to pick a piece of paper
from the box, and then ask them to read out
loud the sentences, locate the information in
the text that helps them to fill in the blank,
and give the answers.

 Invite some students to answer orally, locate the

the SEA Games title?
4. Which Men’s Football team won the gold

3. The Vietnamese Women’s Foolball team


successfully defended the SEA Games title.
4. The Thailand’s Men’s Football Team won the gold
medal.

5. Because Vietnam had first carried out the intensive


programme for its athletes, both at home and
abroad; secondly, the Vietnamese athletes
competed in high spirits, with the strong support
of their countrymen.

POST-READING Ask the students to list some of the Vietnamese athletes 10 minutes
they love.
Let the students work in groups of four or five. Ask
them to choose the one they love, say what they are
famous for, and the reasons why they love him/her
based on the conversation.
The teacher makes a demo first.

B: I admire Nguyen Thi Anh Vien most.
A: What is she famous for?
B: Nguyễn Thị Ánh Viên is famous for her
achievements as a swimmer.
