1. Copy and complete this table (Use Google – unless you have an excellent memory)
a. Name 2 x plants and 2 x animals that have adapted to these environments. State their
adaptations and how they help them survive
cold environment
Plant
Cushion plants - these are compact, low growing plants. These characteristics help them to
survive in cold and windy conditions. They trap airborne dust and use it as a source of
nutrients.
Arctic poppy - this has a hairy stem to retain heat. The flower can track the sun in the sky to
maximise the amount of sunlight it receives so that it can increase photosynthesis.
Animal
In the winter, Arctic foxes are often found near sea ice. This environment provides few
places to hide. Their striking white fur allows them to blend in with their surroundings and
not be seen by their predators.
In order to keep warm during the winter, caribou have two layers of insulating fur.
tropical rainforest
Plant
Drip tips - plants have leaves with pointy tips. This allows water to run off the leaves quickly
without damaging or breaking them.
Buttress roots - large roots have ridges which create a large surface area that help to support
large trees.
Animal
The sloth uses camouflage and moves very slowly to make it difficult for predators to spot.
The spider monkey has long, strong limbs to help it to climb through the rainforest trees.
