BIOLOGY WORK SHEET LESSON : WEATHER CLIMATE AND ANIMAL ADAPTATION

TOPIC 1:- WEATHER &ELEMENTS OF WEATHER ,CLIMATE AND THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT
THE CLIMATE .

FILL IN THE BLANKS

1. Weather describes the state of atmosphere over a short period of time

2. Climate is the weather patterns that are observed in a region over a long period of
time.

DEFIINE THE FOLLOWING

1 . Meteorology :- The scientific study of weather is called

meteorology.

2 . Meteorologists :- Scientists who study and predict weather

are known as meteorologists. Meteorologists study
patterns in weather and the several factors that affect it.

NAME THE FOLLOWING

1 . The measure of how cold or hot a place is = Temperature

2 . The amount of water vapour in the atmosphere = Humidity

3 . The water that falls from the atmosphere to the Earth’s surface in the form of rain , snow ,
hail or sleet . Precipitation.

MATCH THE FOLLOWING

a.Temperature - hygrometer (B)

b.Humidity - anemometer (D)

c .Rain fall - maximum amd minimum thermometer (A)

d .Wind - rain gauge (C)

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING

1 . Write a short note on the factors that affect climate ?

There are many factors that affect climate .

Latitude ( distance from the equator):

The rays of sunlight fall on the regions near the equator

directly while they hit the regions near the poles in a slanted
way.

Altitude ( height above sea level):

The higher above sea level a place is ,the cooler it is .

Distance from a waterbody:

Places near a large waterbody do not have large

variations in temperature when compared to places that are
far away from a water body.

Ocean currents:

Ocean currents might bring large amounts of warm or

cold water near a particular section of the shore.
Topic 2 : - ADAPTATIONS OF ANIMALS TO DIFFERENT CLIMATES

POLAR REGION :-

Fill in the blanks

a. The region near the north pole and the south pole are the polar region.
b. The average winter temperature is -30 degree celcius.
c. In polar region the top layer of the soil is permanently frozen.
d. Arctic hare and arctic fox develop a brown coat during summer

e. Emperor Penguins and musk oxen Huddle to stay warm .

After observing the picture of the polar bear & the emperor penguin write it’s adaptations

1. Polar bears have large wide paws with which to walk on

the snow.
2. They have long, sharp curved claws that help them walk
on ice.The fur on the bottom of their paws also help them
walk on ice.
3. Polar bears are good swimmers .They close their nostrils
underwater so that water cannot get in .
4. Polar bear’s long ,coarse fur is oily and thus helps them to
shake off the water when they come out of the water after
swimming.
Adaptations of Emperor penguin

Emperor penguins huddle in

groups to stay calm.

The dark colored feathers on

the penguin’s back absorb
heat from sunlight to keep it
warm.

Penguins do not fly but are

good swimmers
DESERT REGION :-

I . Why are there only a few large animals in the deserts ?

Ans) There are relatively very few large mammals in

this region because
they are 1) are not capable of storing sufficient
water.&

2) Withstanding the heat &

3) The desert provides little shelter from the hot

sunlight for large animals .

II. What are nocturnal animals?

Some desert animals remain in active during the day.

They are active only at night, when is temperature is
low, so that they donot loose their precious body
water. Animals that have this adaptation are set to
be nocturnal.

Describe the adaptations of the following animals found un the desert

region
Toads and frogs:- Toads and frogs seal themselves in burrows
with getatinous (jelly-like) secretions and sleep for 8 to 9
months until it trains.

Fennec fox:- Fennec foxes are nocturnal. They have large ears
that help them to release body heat and thus keep them
cool.

Ostriches:- Ostriches have long legs and flat feet that help
them to run fast and easily on hot sand without sanking in it.

Meerkats:- Meerkats have dark patches of fur around their

eyes. The fur helps to cut down the glare from bright
sunlight and thus helps them to see well.

RAINFOREST REGION :-

Why do tropical forests have a great variety of plants and animals ?

Ans) Tropical rainforests support a greater number of variety of animals

compared to any other region because of characteristics such as

1) Warm weather. , 2) constant supply of water, 3) and the

availability of a wide variety of food.

Describe some adaptations of the following animals found in the

tropical rainforest region
Parrots :- Parrots have specialized feet with two curling front
toes and two curling back toes, which helps them hold on to
branches.

Monkeys :- Monkeys use their arms and legs and sometimes

even tails to swing from branch to branch.

The red-eyed tree frog :- The red-eyed tree frog lives on trees.
It has sticky pads on its feet that help it to climb branches.

Toucans:- Toucans are birds that have a long, large beak or

bill. The beak is adapted to reach nuts on branches that are
too small to support the bird’s weight. Toucans use their
strong beaks to crack open the tough shell of nuts.
