Introductory Message
This Self Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLMS is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Lesson
Dividing Simple Fractions
1 and Whole Numbers
What’s In
In the previous module, you have learned the reciprocal of a number and the
multiplicative inverse of each other. To find the reciprocal of a fraction, interchange
the numerator and denominator. Let us have a review of the previous lesson;
𝟐 𝟐 𝟑
Let us take . The reciprocal of is .
𝟑 𝟑 𝟐
2 3 6
Multiplying the number and its reciprocal, we have × = = 1.
3 2 6
𝟐 3
So, and are reciprocals or the multiplicative inverse of each other.
𝟑 2
1
If × = 1 , what is the missing factor?
2
36 1
If × 7 5 = 1, 𝑤ℎ𝑦 ? 𝐸𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑛.
5
Remember,
If the product of two numbers is 1, then they are reciprocals of one another.

Study the examples below on dividing whole number by a fraction and vice versa.
𝟑 𝟒 𝟓 𝟐𝟎 𝟐
𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝑨 𝟒÷ = 𝒙 = 𝒐𝒓 𝟔
𝟓 𝟏 𝟑 𝟑 𝟑
𝟒 𝟐 𝟒 𝟑 𝟏𝟐 𝟔
Lesson 1B ÷ = 𝒙 = 𝒐𝒓
𝟕 𝟑 𝟕 𝟐 𝟏𝟒 𝟕
Solve these problems in your activity notebook. Then, compare your answer with the
solution presented on the next page.

Lesson 1A Jose has 2 hectares of farmland. He wants to subdivide it into
3
hectares to plant different crops. Into how many parts can he
divide his farmland?
5 1
Lesson 1B A meter rope is to be cut into pieces that are meter long. How
6 12
many pieces can be cut from the rope?
What Is It
Looking back at the problems above we should write first the number sentence
to identify the dividend and the divisor.

𝟐 crops. Into how many parts can he
The number sentence is 2 ÷
divide his farmland? 𝟑 = n
In your number sentence change the whole number into a fraction by writing
the denominator which is 1. To divide fractions, change the divisor to its reciprocal
and change the operation to multiplication. Then multiply both the numerator then
the denominator.
2
The number sentence is : 2÷ 3
=N
4 CO_Q1_Math5_Module16
2
For example: To divide 2÷ =N;
3
2
2÷ =N Change the whole number to a fraction with a denominator of 1.

The number sentence is ÷ =N
6 12
In your number sentence, change the divisor to its reciprocal and change the
operation to multiplication. Then multiply both the numerator then the denominator.
5 1 5 12
Solution: ÷ =6 x
6 12 1
5 𝑥 12 60
= = = 10
6𝑥1 6

So 10 pieces, each meter long, can be cut from a meter rope.
