Lab Session # 4(2)

To perform parting (cylindrical work piece) operation on lathe using

parting tool

1. Introduction
The operation of cutting off a piece from a part held in the chuck of a lathe is
known as parting. It is normally used to remove the finished end of a workpiece
from the bar stock that is clamped in the chuck. Other uses include things such
as cutting the head off a bolt.

Figure#4.1: Parting on Lathe Machine [1] (“Modeling and intelligent”)

Parting is an operation of slicing the work piece or cutting off a part of the
workpiece to produce a desired length and shape at the end of the workpiece.

Parting operation is performed on the lathe machine using a single point cutting
tool whose shape is specially ground for this operation. The tool is held
perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece.

The process involves penetration of the parting tool into the surface of the
workpiece with the help of the cross slide. The workpiece is rotated at half the
speed required for turning and the feed varies from 0.07-0.15 per revolution.
The maximum depth of cut that can be given is equal to the width of the tool.
For parting a large circumference, a number of cuts are used.
2. Operations
i. Fit the parting tool in the tool post.
ii. Touch the workpiece with the tool.
iii. Fix the specific velocity for the workpiece.
iv. Fix the depth of cut. Set the length which is required to be cut.
v. Start rotating the workpiece and give the feed to the workpiece.

3. Conclusions
A workpiece of a specified length is obtained, with both the ends having fine
surface finish, is obtained. A little bit grinding may be required to remove the
stalk protruding from the parted surface. Make sure that the lathe machine is
switched off when you are selecting the lathe speed and when you are mounting
the tool and the workpiece.

Make sure that the carriage is at the extreme left when you are mounting the
workpiece into the chuck. While operating the lathe machine, the operator
should wear proper safety gear like safety gloves, safety glasses and avoid loose
clothing. Make sure that the carriage is moved to and fro when the tool is
advanced into the workpiece.

3.1. Results
Parting operation is mainly used to cut off the end of the workpiece that is
clamped in the chuck. Parting can be very accurately and efficiently performed
on the lathe machine.
