Definition
Accessibility is the level of
ability of people to learn,
create, and interact with the
web.
Accessibility

“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an
essential aspect.”
-Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web

Accessibility falls under several sections

● Access to hardware or mode af access to web

● Access to internet
● Access to information
● Ability to use or find that information
Accessibility to Computers

As of last year only 49.7% of households

had access to a computer or device in the
household. In developing countries it is
closer to 30% but jumps to an average of
80% in developed countries. The main
operating system is windows and has been
since its debut in 1985. This is the first step
in access as it is the mode through which
we access the web.
Access to the internet

The internet is more accessible by people in

the world as you don't necessarily need to own
a computer or device capable of connecting
and can share with others. Despite this it only
adds about 10% more people with access to
the internet but not a computer of their own. It
changes from 49% access to computers to 59%
access to the internet.
Information

For people who have access to the web there's

another threat facing them in the pursuit of free
access to the information that it holds. Censorship is
a threat that grows in possibility everyday as
governments and organizations alike seek to control
the flow of information that people see and read
every day. In China a censored version of a search
engine already exists and another more stringent
and powerful is in creation. The internet is not even
available across the world and already it is under
threat of being undermined at its core of free access
to information.
Ability to use information

When websites and web tools are properly

designed and coded, people with disabilities can
use them. However, currently many sites and tools
are developed with accessibility barriers that make
them difficult or impossible for some people to
use. Many sites are built in such a way that they
are impossible to navigate with disabilities despite
the internet's purpose of being able to be accessed
by anyone. It is one of many examples of the work
that is needed to bring the internet to the next
steps as it is fairly new and is still in its developing
stages. The presidents that we billed in to the
internet and how to access it now will be the
building blocks of its shape in the future.
