Introduction to Technology and the Internet

Technology

Technology can be defined as the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and

use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment. It is also

applying these things to other branches of knowledge such as industrial arts, engineering, applied

science, and more (Dictionary.com, n.d.).

Technology has its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is the improvement of

quality of life. We use technology in our daily lives from cooking food, washing dishes, cleaning

the floor, playing online games, creating e-mails and e-documents, printing documents, and

checking the news on our phones and/or televisions.

David (2020) mentioned that technology is beneficial to human for several reasons. First,

treatment of sick people to save them and the combat against harmful viruses and bacteria are

improved by technology. Second, communication and research are enhanced by technology.

Companies can communication easily with other companies internationally. Lastly, technology

has also increased the productivity of almost every industry in the world.

Technology also has its disadvantages. According to David (2020), humans now depend

greatly on technology. For example, the calculator is a good invention; humans no longer make

mental calculation and no longer work his or her memory. Thus, the decline of human capital

implies an increase in unemployment. In some places, devices can replace the human mind.

David (2020) also said that the use of technology needs rules and new laws:

For example, internet use is an individual freedom. However, the invention of the atomic

bomb cannot be an individual freedom. In fact, regulations are difficult to implement

when

these technologies are introduced – such as regulation surrounding the impending arrival

of autonomous vehicles.
She finally mentioned that most technological discoveries aim to reduce human effort. It

would imply that more work is done by machines. This means that less work for people, and

processes are becoming automated and jobs are made redundant.

In the end, technology has its pros and cons. Responsible use of technology is needed

every time we use it.

Internet

The internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world. Through the

internet, people can share information and communicate from anywhere with an internet

connection (Britannica, n.d.). Without the internet, people’s lives would be much harder.

People use the internet for many reasons. Sathyanarayanan (2021) listed a few uses of the

internet. We use it to seek and share information, communicate and collaborate with other

people, work remotely, do transactions with business entities, download files, get educated, get

entertained, get real-time data in our surrounding to automate devices, connect with people and

machines, and many more.

Nowadays, the most influential medium in the world is the internet. By being the biggest

medium of communication, advertising, and information source, it becomes essential to almost

every aspect of our livelihood. The accessibility of the Internet has “opened the world to people
by stripping away geographical barriers and sharing information instantaneously.” (Freeman,

2021).

Freeman (2021) stated some advantages of the internet. First, it is a communication

forum. He stated that internet technology made it easier and convenient for people and

businesses to communicate with their friends and clients for it only takes a matter of seconds to

send a message. It is also a forum where people can discuss their thoughts and opinions about

certain topics without being physically there. Second, it is abundant in information. Any kind of

information you may need for your business or personal use is very accessible anywhere at any

time. “Whether you want to know more about a certain medical condition or know the political

state in a certain country, all are available.” (Freeman, 2021). Third, one can learn anything on

the internet. Whether to learn how to make a simple origami to how broad physics is, one can

learn it from a website or a YouTube video. Lastly, it is a source of entertainment. It provides

people with all types of entertainment. “It can be playing or downloading games, surfing

YouTube or celebrity websites, or catching up on your latest Netflix series.” (Freeman, 2021).

Although the internet has many advantages, it also has its disadvantages. Freeman (2021)

listed some disadvantages. It can cause addiction disorders especially in teenagers, it is prone to

cybercrime, cyberbullying, online threatening and harassment, viruses and malware, and money

frauds, it made people have less interaction and face-to-face communication that it affects their

social and communication skills, it is a risk to get your privacy exposed, and also may be a a

source of wrong and unreliable information.

With these things mentioned, we should be responsible in using the internet.
