ESSAY

“The internet gave us access to everything; but it also gave everything access to us”

(Vietch, n.d.). The internet is a global networking platform that has immensely increased

connectivity by implementing technology. There are approximately 7 billion users of wireless

devices currently engaged with internet technology. These technological changes have

impacted accessibility to education, global connectivity and communication. The

manufacturing sector, businesses and consumers are also being alter dramatically. The

Internet is the greatest technological invention developed that has rapidly

revolutionized every aspect of our lives and society both positively and negatively.

Though the internet has become part of our everyday life, however, excessive usage

has resulted in addictions. The internet has epically enhanced communication where people

chart and make decisions in real-time, stay connected to family and friends, send data

globally, make presentations, live in parallel “game world” and share experiences with the

public. This dependency has led to some cases of internet addictions, where persons prefer

social isolation. Loved ones and other connections to reality are neglected. “Children

addicted to mobile-supported games like video games may also be pushed to lead sedentary

lifestyles and forgo healthy exercises and other outdoor activities” (Devloper, 2021). Social

support of community members, family and friends can be a solution.

As Artificial Intelligences digitize the manufacturing sector, job losses are inevitable.

Artificial Intelligence is technology which enables a machine to mimic human intelligences.

Machine Learning is the process of uploading past data into machines so they can perform

complex tasks by replicating intelligent human behaviour. Manufacturers benefit from

increased levels of productivity, profits, a reduction in human risk and errors. As machines

substitute humans, job losses occur. According to Grillo (n.d.) “artificial intelligence is
destroying the traditional world of work”. However, the jobs automated are usually

repetitive and monotonous. These employees can be reinstated to more complex and

strategic roles.

Businesses and consumers are beneficiaries of internet technologies but are also the

biggest victims of cybercrimes. The internet is a virtual bridge linking businesses and

consumers. Businesses can now operate and compete in the global market due to the free

information flows. Users benefit from limitless opportunities such as online banking,

convenient shopping, job seeking, global advertising etc. The internet has unfortunately

attracted the attention of cyber criminals. Cybercrimes are software viruses, identity theft,

cyber terrorism, phishing and hacking. “All these factors can lead to loss of money,

valuable information, and damage to hardware infrastructure” (Devloper, 2021). Users

can protect themselves by frequently updating security software and changing privacy

settings on their devices.

Students can easily access quality education as well as inappropriate content that isn’t

age suitable. According to Eisler (n.d.) “the internet is a limitless library at your fingertips”

that gives teachers and students the accessibility to information effortlessly. Educators,

parents and students can now interact and communicate using social media, messaging apps

and chat forums. The learning process becomes interesting and fun with the use of animation

and videos to capture students’ attention. Although the internet offers plenty of educational

opportunities, here children are vulnerable to the negative influences of illegal activities and

inappropriate material like cyberbullying and pornography. The effects of cyberbullying on

victims are long-term mental and social problems. Parental supervision is strongly

recommended to monitor screen time and restriction of negative websites.

In conclusion, the internet has been the best thing to have happened to the human

society. The amount of thing accomplished by utilizing the internet is extremely

phenomenal. It has led to the complete transformation in communication, availability of

knowledge, endless opportunities and social interaction. Though the internet has negatively

affected society in some aspects, there are contingency plans to eradicate these problems.
