WORKSHEET - Circles

Section A (1 Marks)
1. The length of the tangent drawn from a point 8 cm away from the centre of a circle of radius
6 cm is :
(A) Ö7cm (B) 2Ö7 cm (C) 10 cm (D) 5 cm

2. If the angle between two radii of a circle is 1300, then the angle between the tangents at the
end points of radii at their point of intersection is :
(A) 900 (B) 500 (C) 700 (D) 400

3. To draw two tangents to a circle, which are inclined at an angle of 60 0, the perpendiculars are
to be drawn at the ends of two radii which are at an angle of :

(A) 600 (B) 1200 (C) 900 D) 750

4. Number of tangents which are parallel to a secant is :

a) 1 b) 2 c) 3 d) infinite.

5. C (O,r1) and C(O,r2) are two concentric circles with r1>r2. AB is a chord of C(O,r2) at C, then:
A) AB =r1 B) AB = r2 C) AC = BC D) AB = r1+r2

6. A line touches a circle of radius 4cm. Another line is drawn which is tangent to the circle. If
the two lines are parallel then distance between them is
A) 4cm B) 6cm C) 7cm D) 8cm

Section B (2Marks)

7.If PA and PB are two tangents drawn from a point P to a circle with centre O touching it at A
and B, prove that OP is the perpendicular bisector of AB.

8. AB is a diameter and AC is a chord of a circle such that ÐBAC = 300. If the tangent at C
intersects AB produced at D, prove that BC = BD.
9. In two concentric circles, prove that a chord of larger circle which is tangent to smaller circle
is bisected at the point of contact.

Section C (3marks)
10. Two circles with centres X and Y touch externally at P.
If tangents AT and BT meet the common tangent at T,
then prove that AT= BT.

11. ABC is an isosceles triangle in which AB=AC which is circumscribed about a circle
as shown in the figure. Show that BC is bisected at the point of contact.

12. Prove that the intercept of a tangent between a pair of parallel tangents to a circle
subtend a right angle at the centre of the circle.

13. ABC is a right angled triangle, right angled at B, such that BC= 6 cm and AB= 8 cm, find the
radius of its incircle.

14. ABC is an isosceles triangle with AB =AC. If the circle of DABC touches sides, AB, BC and
CA at D, E, and F respectively, prove that E bisects BC. 

15. A tangent PT is drawn parallel to a chord AB of a circle, as shown in given figure. Prove that
APB is an isosceles triangle.

Section D ( 5marks)

16. Two tangents TP and TQ are drawn to a circle with centre O, from an external point T. Prove
that ÐPTQ = 2Ð OPQ

17. A circle touches the side BC of a DABC at point P and touches AB and AC when produced at
Q and R respectively. Show that AQ = ½ perimeter of D ABC

18. In the given figure, PA and PB are two tangents drawn to a circle with centre O and radius r.
If OP= 2r, show that DAPB is equilateral.
20. In the given figure ‘O’ is the centre of the circle.
Determine ÐAQB and ÐAMB, if PA and PB
are tangents and, ÐAPB = 750

21. Two circle with centers O and O’ of radii 3cm and 4cm respectively intersect at two points
P and Q such that OP and O’P are tangents to the two circles. Find the length of the
common chord P Q .
