What Do We Mean?

The article has four conceptions of practice of learning. Learning in, from and for
practice. It requires participation in the activities and discourse of practice, the use of
ideas, understandings, and knowledge to make sense of, learn from, or inquiry into
practice. Teaching is an important aspect of learning in, from and for practice of
teaching and learning. How we might help the teachers to investigate practice and use
what they have learned through the article to make sense of their teaching is an
important area of study.

The teachers must identify the areas of teaching and the pedagogy and practice
they use that will be most appropriate for study. An individual’s development of their
teaching is best achieved when it is shared and supported by another, often more
experienced or skilled, colleague, and where ideas for improvement can be tried out in
the classroom, observed, reflected upon and discussed. Each of us possesses an
individual philosophy of teaching and learning that guides our behaviors and becomes
the basis upon which we defend and practice what we do (Draper, 1994). Our own
unique philosophical orientations become translated into daily teaching practices and
strategies of our profession. Many of these teaching strategies are adopted and applied
from tested learning theories while other "tools" of the classroom are developed from
non-scientific approaches, personal beliefs, past and present experiences, and those
intuitive responses that may occur in certain unexpected events of the day with
learners.

According to Mezirow (1985), learning is a process of using previous

experiences, learning, and prior interpretative meanings to construct new and/or revised
interpretations and meanings of such experiences to guide future action. When one's
action, guided by such ways of thinking and beliefs, fail to produce successful or
expected results, one's frame of reference tends to be transformed through a critical
analysis and reflection of their assumptions. Individuals with more functional frames of
reference tend to be more inclusive, differentiating, permeable, critically reflective, and
integrative of their own experiences and interpretations with others (Mezirow, 1991).

It is true that in our profession in education, we are equipped with a lot of theories
in teaching for us to make sure that our student will learn the subject matter. However,
those theories will be useless if we will not practice or applied in our teaching strategy.
There are some who are good in analyzing the theory and applying it in teaching, but
also there are some who are not good in theory that is why they depend their strategy
base on the practice and experience that they have. As a teacher it is our duty to
become better by exploring strategies that will meet the student’s needs.

Teaching is said to be the noblest profession because without teachers there is

no other profession. Many are called, but few are chosen. There is lot of them who tried
to become one, but not all succeeded. Becoming a teacher requires a lot of patience
and compassion, because if you are chosen to be a teacher you will find some qualities
in you that are befitting of a teacher. Hence, teaching is a profession that is hard thing to
do because it encompasses many roles to be done well. Teaching is not an easy job,
because there is no such thing as easy job. Work hard and you'll be paid for it not just
with the money but with the contentment in life that your job brings to you most
especially the teaching profession. As they said that, "teachers affect eternity you'll
never know when his influence stops".

Let us first have a clear definition of what is a teacher. How could we really
define the word - teacher? Is he someone who is duly licensed professional who
posse’s dignity and reputation with high moral values as well as technical and
professional competence as they defined it or simply someone who touches life and
make a difference? The article, "Learning teaching in, from and for practice” wrote by
Magdalene Lampert is all about learning teaching. The article is divided into four
different conception of practice which is very important for us to know. As we go further,
we can better understand learning teaching and how important it is to us.

The first thing is that the Work of Teaching. For the teaching process to work out
the teacher and the student should have harmonious relationship. The one who taught
them the teacher: and the one who is being taught the student. In this case, there
should always have a cooperation and collaboration between the two for the process to
be successful. The article states that, "The teacher–student relationship is fundamental
to the work of teaching, but students do not present themselves in the classroom only
as individuals. They are there as members of stable and dynamic groups, and they
interact in those groups around learning content. “Interaction between the two is very
much important in the work of teaching. As the role of the teacher is not just to facilitate
learning but also provide the basic needs of the students when it comes to the cognitive,
affective and psychomotor domains of learning. The teaching process is not just about
the learning of the student from their teacher but also the learning’s that the teacher can
get from his students. Learning should not just encompass the four corners of the room
but also the real-life situation. The students should be taught well by the teacher. The
more prepared you are the luckier you will be. In the game of life, including this scenario
- work of teaching, the teacher must always be prepared on anything and everything.
When it comes to mastery of the subject matter and most important is the delivery of the
lessons to be taught. For the work of teaching to be successful, the teacher must be an
effective and efficient when it comes to teaching. He must be competent enough to
teach students not just the subject matter but also teach them about life. The teacher
main role is to touch the lives of his students and make a difference. The teacher is the
one who mold the students mind, body and soul to achieve their goals in life.

The second thing is about Conception of practice. The article states that,
"practice itself is about using tools, rather than simply knowing they exist, implying that
the work of preparation must be about both introducing the tools that the collective uses
and teaching their proper use." Just like any other profession, teachers should also
practice their profession just like what the doctors, lawyers, and others did. Before
becoming a professional teacher and having the diploma, the teacher must first
undergone practice teaching. This is just a steppingstone to be a professional one.
Practice makes perfect. Anything that we do needs to be practiced well. Imagining being
in the field is not enough, experiencing it is better. In this practice teaching stage, you
can now use all the things that you have learned in the four years of training ground in
college. All those methods, techniques and strategies that you know, you can now apply
it in the real classroom setting. You will now experience the real situation in the field of
teaching not the ideal one. Often, we tend to assume that teaching is easy but no it's
not. That is why practice is very important to anything that we do.

The third past is all about Practice as That Which Contrasts with Theory. It states
there that theory as thinking and practice as action has been associated with the
Cartesian dualism between mind and body. Theory is our way of thinking and practice is
our way of doing action. In this practice, we can enact the things that we learned and
give meaning into it. In some cases during the actual classroom teaching setting, it
doesn’t always follow what theories we should followed it always apply in our daily
settings. A teacher always has their own way how to insert those theories or what in
their mind that sometimes they conflict with the other theories.
The last one is about the practice of teaching. "Learning the practice of teaching
is not only about learning to do what teachers do but learning to call oneself a teacher
and to believe in what teachers believe in. "Learning the practice of teaching is not that
easy. It takes courage to pursue teaching and applying it. Teachers are one of the most
respected individuals in the community because of what they had contributed to the
mind of the people. And being one of them is so hard to be. The practice of teaching
serves as foundation because it is about carrying out the entire thing that you have
learned. Your identity as a teacher will mark to each and every one because of how you
affect the lives of the learners. Being a teacher and becoming one of them takes great
fulfillment and responsibility as well. You should be a role model of what is just and what
is right. If you belong to the group, you are very much lucky because only those who are
brave stand still.

In conclusion, the word practice differentiates from different meaning how it can
relate to learning teaching process. The concept of the practices illustrates how to be
learned when one is learning teaching. Working on learning in the school involves
teacher and student interaction. It means the collaboration of work within the student
and teachers has potential to enhance instruction. The conception of practice not all
professionals can be able to teach every profession has their own tool to work for so
that they learned and work on their own field. The practices as that which contrast with
theory not all teachers can apply theories in their teaching some can relate and apply
what he experiences as I’m saying every teacher has their own uniqueness to execute
their knowledge or how to impart their learning on the theories, they known and different
principles in teaching if their strategies work it doesn’t mean it works on you as well. The
last one is learning the practice of teaching as a teacher we should create our own
identity the images that the community will recognize. Showing of how-to teachers is the
noblest profession in the fields of teaching. Working on schools is not enough that you
are teachers sharing your knowledge and skills to the community and work coordinately
to other cultural groups is a big factor.
Reflection:
This article relates me in some point that what I have learned during my four
years in college and 3 years teaching in public school that all the learning’s and
teaching experience I gained is enough to impart it to my future teaching career. Just
like my first time in teaching in private school. Even though I am equipped with
knowledge and learning materials to execute my lesson, I felt something is missing. I
tried to find way how to impart my knowledge to my student as I experienced the actual
and learning environment of the classroom setting and given me the opportunity to try
the art of teaching my pedagogies and strategies. However, but still I know to myself
that I am still lacking in experience. They say an effective teacher has a wide-ranging
repertoire of different teaching and learning models, strategies and techniques and
knows how to create the right conditions for learning. So, I must learn to have a good
assessment practice that can contribute to better learning and higher achievement to
my student.

I also believe as a teacher I have my own principle of teaching to follow. I believe

every teacher has their own technique and uniqueness. During my teaching I
encountered diverse students with different learning style and behavior. As a teacher, I
must start with strategies that are easy to implement and moving on to those that will
help students to develop their skills further and meet their needs. A teachers was not
born to be excellent right away, like students we develop with the help of experiences
and if we don’t have enough experience and practice becoming an effective and
efficient teacher will not be attained.
