METHOD STATEMENT OF W-BEAM GUARDRAIL INSTALLATION IN
ROAD SIDE

 Setting out and fixing alignment at site

According to the guardrail installation location list given by RDA or instruction given by the
engineer the alignment is fixed by considering following facts.
Available space from asphalt edge at road out side
Obstacles such as electrical poles, telecom lines, and water lines
Setting out will be done to match the alignment and to get smooth appearance at final.

 Guard rail material laying along the road side

Guardrail materials will transport to site from stock yard by using crane truck and lay along the road
side by manual with care of avoid damage to galvanizing coat. Materials will unload at road side
only for relevant days work required quantity.

Guard rail post driver machine can drive (Hammering & Vibrating) post directly in to the ground and
thereby no concreting is necessary for post fixing. This post driver machine can make road safety
barrier installation fast and easy. The post driver crawler mounted is intended for installation of road
safety barriers where productivity and dependability are essential factors. This post driver drives post
with great precision by its stability and easy handling. This machine is designed to be completed a
number of useful accessories, such as Hydraulic Auger and Extractor for removal of old posts or
incorrectly drived posts. This machine can align posts with one another at proper distances apart. It
provides sturdy support and impact resistance for highway guardrail sections. Posts are installed at
the proper spacing, alignment, and mounting height.

Guardrails can be installed on solid surfaces using the base plate mounted post. Locate positions for
base plates and mark holes locations being careful to align locations with one another at proper
distances apart. Drill into solid surface at each marked spot. Align post over holes insert anchor bolts
and fix with non shrinkage grout or equalent material and tighten. Provides sturdy support for rail
sections and offers significant impact resistance.
 Post fixing in ground with concreting

In normal guard rail system the post height is around 1.85m and it need to drive the post 1.1m deep
into ground. In locations where 1.1m deep driving impossible due to interrupt by hard rock or utility
lines such as water, Telecom, electricity or gas; the guard rail post is fixed on concrete casted on
ground. This system needs 1.2m height post. First a hole of 450X450X600mm is excavated and fixes
the post by concreting the hole up to ground level. Posts are installed at the proper spacing,
alignment, and mounting height. Then the guard rail beam can assemble as normal. It provides sturdy
support and impact resistance for highway guardrail sections.

 Fixing spacer blocks, w-beam and reflectors
While posts are fixing post spacers and w-beams are fixed by the same labour gang. Spacer blocks
are fixed to post by using two nos 16mm diameter 35mm hexagonal nut and bolts. Two numbers of
flat washers are placed before fixing nut.

Then w-beams are mounted to spacer block using one rectangular washer, flat washer and
16mm diameter 40mm mushroom headed nut and bolt, also reflector can mount to same bolt.
Normally distance between reflectors 12m and it depends on the site condition and as specified by
the engineer. W-beams are jointed by the use of eight Nos M16 Grade 8.8MPa strength bolts with
the mushroom head on the traffic side, and hexagonal nuts without washers on the reverse.

Care should be taken when jointing beams to lap the guardrail in the direction of travel of the
adjacent traffic. In this most common situation, the upstream section overlays the downstream
section as shown in Figure below. This is done to minimize potential vehicle snagging on the end of
a section should the guardrail pocket under impact.
 Fixing end terminals
Fishtail type end terminals is fixed to both ends by the use of eight Nos M16 Grade 8.8MPa strength
bolts with the mushroom head on the traffic side, and hexagonal nuts without washers on the
reverse.

 Finishing works
Final finishing will be done by tightening all the fasteners and adjusting horizontal alignment and
vertical alignment to get nice smooth appearance.

Convex & Concave Guardrail
Rail sections to be installed on curves having a radius of 1.5m to 45m can be curved in factory
fabricating facilities prior to delivery. Rail can be curved either convex or concave as required.
Terms convex or concave refer to the direction curved, outward or inward relative to the traffic face
of the rail.

The Diagrams and Chart Provide Data for Locating Posts and Curves
Follow the steps below for each piece of the rail section in the curved run. The arc may not be
consistent and each consecutive piece of rail may differ in radius from the previous one.

Guard Rail Reflectors

These are attached to the guard rail fixed on bridge, open ground; tunnel etc, to prevent traffic from
getting accidentally coming in contact. These guard rail reflectors have a reflective surface and
attention catching color combination which helps them to be visible even in poor weather conditions
and night time. Super strong structure of these reflectors enables them to withstand the impact of
rain, sunlight, wind and stones. Made from eco-friendly material do not cause any harm to the
environment. These reflectors can be mounting to the guard rail beam by nut and bolting. Its prism
shape and reflective film has the capability to intensify and reflect the light beam of automobile to
catch driver’s attention. This film stays for a long period of time and do not fade its reflective
property. It has an easy & theft proof installation mechanism. Reflectors are available with red,
yellow or white color reflective films.

Guard Rail End Terminals


Finish your highway style guardrail with round terminal ends which are ready to bolt onto full rail
section ends. Provides impact energy deflection to reduce damage to both vehicle and guard rail
system while preventing vehicle from colliding with protected structure. These terminals provide a
smooth end surface to guard rail in high pedestrian areas to prevent injury and torn clothing. Select
hardware kit to complete your installation. Each kit includes 8 bolts, nuts and washers.
