0 DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

2.0 SETTING OUT AND SURVEY


2.1 Before work is carried out, license surveyor to survey, check all bench mark, base lines and routing
where the pipe works shall be laid.

3.0 PILOT TRENCHING


3.1 Trial holes and exploration to ascertain the exact position of all existing services along the pipe route to
determine the most suitable position for the permanent works. Trial holes shall be 50 meters apart from
hole to hole

4.0 EXCAVATION
4.1 Where work is carried out within road reserve, it shall comply fully with all regulations and
requirements in force in that place by all relevant local and public authorities.

4.2 Time of working allowed by the Authorities may or may not fall within day light hours or within the
normal working hours of the Authorities.

4.3 No trench is to be excavated in the carriageway unless specific approval has been given by the
Authorities. The whole operation of excavation and reinstatement of the trench shall be completed as
quickly as possible and ensure that minimum interference to traffic flow is maintained at all times.

4.4 A joint site inspection shall be arranged before commencement of work if so requested by the relevant
authorities. After pegging out, to inform the relevant authorities of the actual date of commencement at
least one week in advance of and on the day of commencement.

4.5 If specific approval has been given to lay services across the road by open excavation, cutting of the
metalled pavement shall be done by using a diamond cutter and pneumatic tool to ensure that the top
edges of the excavation are neat and straight.

4.7 All trench excavation and other work carried out within the limits of any road reserve shall be
completed as rapidly as possible and not more than half of the width of the carriageway shall be
obstructed at one time. A minimum width of 4m wide of traffic lanes shall have to be kept clear for
flow of traffic and where necessary the shoulder should be strengthened to the satisfaction of the
relevant Authorities. Road drains and grids shall be kept free from obstruction.

4.8 Trenches shall be provided with adequate shuttering, walling an struts to prevent the adjoining road
pavement from cracking and subsiding if necessary. To provide barricades to fence off the works and
approved road sign boards placed at regular intervals to ensure safety of the public and vehicles.
4.9 Carriageway excavation across important and busy road and junctions shall be carried out during off-
peak hours or at night. The authority will specify the appropriate times based on the merits of each
case and such conditions shall be strictly adhered to by the Contractor.

4.10 When works cannot be substantially completed to enable back filling of trenches on the same day, these
trenches shall be covered with mild steel plate of such thickness to withstand the expected traffic
vehicular load to the requirement of Authorities concerned.

5.0 RESTORATION OF EXCAVATED PIPE TRENCH


5.1 Where pipe trench is along/across tarmacadam roads, the pipe shall be surrounded with sand topped up
with 375mm thick of crusher run materials followed by 100mm thick of dense bituminous mix
comprising 60mm thick binder course and 40mm thick wearing course. The crusher run and binder
course surface shall receive a layer of tack coat before the application of binder course material and
wearing course materials. The wearing course shall be laid 300mm overlapped the excavated pipe
trench. All fill materials shall be compacted by approved means. Refer to Appendix A for details.
