Vector-Valued Functions Exercises

This document provides exercises related to vector-valued functions, arc length, and equivalent parametrizations. It lists problems from sections 1.8 and 1.9 of notes on vector calculus, as well as four multi-part exercises involving determining the tangent line to a space curve at a point, calculating the length of a curve, showing a curve is smooth and giving an equivalent parametrization, and providing an equivalent parametrization of a curve using a different parameter.

MATT201/MATH211 2022: Some Exercises on Vector-Valued

Functions, Arc Length and Equivalent Parametrisations

Try the following problems, where the stated sections are those in the notes
Vector Calculus by M. Corral.

1. Section 1.8: A. 2, 4 B. 7, 8, 10.

2. Section 1.9: A. 1, 3, 4, 5.

E1. Determine, in parametric form, the tangent line to the space curve C
given by the vector function f̄ (t) = (t2 + t)î + (2t4 − 3t2 )ĵ + t3 k̂ where t ∈ [−1, 2]
at the point (2, −1, 1).

E2. Determine the length of the curve given by f̄ (t) = t2 î + 2tĵ + ln tk̂ where
t ∈ [1, e].

E3. Consider the curve C defined by the vector function f̄ (t) = (t2 + 1) cos tî +

(t2 + 1) sin tĵ + 2 2tk̂ where t ∈ [0, 1].
(a) Show that C is smooth.
(b) Give an equivalent parametrisation ḡ of C in terms of a new parameter u
where u ∈ [0, π].

E4. Consider the curve K given by the vector function f̄ (t) = tî + tĵ + t2 k̂
where t ∈ [0, 4]. Give an equivalent parametrisation F̄ of K in terms of a
parameter u ∈ [2, 3] where the connecting map α is taken to be a quadratic
function of the form α(u) = a + bu2 for some constants a and b.
