A personal project by Egbenya Adelaide

WELCOME TO
NATURE’S VOICE
PREFACE
For my personal project, I wanted to learn more about tour-
ism and its importance, I also wanted to be able to inform
others about my findings. To do so, I designed and created a
photobook as my product goal.
In this photobook, contains pictures and information from
three tourist sites; Shai Hills, Chenku Waterfalls and Adom
Waterfalls. The pictures in the photobook are to inform oth-
ers about the beauty in nature and how much importance it
holds to society.
This project chnaged my perspective of tourism and why it
must be kept alive.
Learning how nature is a blessing to humankind and how
much significance it holds from serving as a source of
water for communities, a habitat for wild animals and plants
and also as a place of relaxation.
I hope this photobook brings you into the same light.
Enjoy!!
About Shai Hills
Resource Reserve
One of the smallest protected areas in Ghana, Shai Hills Resource
Reserve is located in Dangme West District of the Greater Accra
Region. It is a 43.4km, 1 hour 26minute drive from the capital of
Ghana, Accra with open hours from 6:00am to 5:00pm daily.
In the year1962, it was declared a forest reserve with an area of
46.7 km2 and made a resource reserve on the 5th of November
1971 by Legislative Agreement.
(L.1.) 710.
In 1973, the Reserve was extended to 51km2.
This forms the Western end of Dahomey gap, an area of low
rainfall which interrupts the West coastal forest belt and is re-
placed by low grass and savannah.
The hills are a series of inselbergs (montains that have been
largely wornt out). With the highest peak rising at 290m and
surrounded by savannah covered plants of about 60m elevation.
HISTORY OF SHAI
HILLS

It served as an ancestral home for the Dangme - Shai between AD

1000 to 1892. By foot the Shai’s migrated from Ile Ife, Nigeria,
first settling at different areas until they all finally settles at current
day Shai Hills. The various hills in the reserve were occupied by
four tribes namely, Sayo, Manyo Yo, Adwuku and Hieweyo.De-
spite these clans being independent they had similar cultures which
were common to one another.
They relied on the land for resources and the hills as a natural de-
fense against invading enemeies.
The Shais were talented in the field of making potteries and beads
during their stay in their ancestral home.
They were originally known as “SƐ” but the British found it diffi-
cult to pronounce, hence, “Shai” was adopted. They maintained a
lifestyle suitable for them until they were expelled from the hills
by the British army in 1892.
Current Day Shai Hills

Each clan relocated to near by towns where their descenants cur-

rently reside, the towns being Agomeda, Kodiabe, Manya Jorpan-
ya and Doryumu and surrounding villages. The Shai couldnt carry
their gods during their expulsion hence their shrines still remain
at the Reserve, such as the Kotoklo and Makpem located at the
sloped of the Hioweyo hills. Manyem festival is celebrated by the
Shais, observed between August and September. They also perform
Dipo rites (puberty). Each clan visits the park once a year to pay
homage to their ancestors.

ANT HILL
This is the habitat for ants. They mostly contain
fine sand, dirt, clay and twigs. Ants use twigs to
fortify the structure of the ant hill. Ant hills do not
contain stones or gravels since they are heavy for
aunts to carry.
About the Waterfall
It was discovered by a hunter whiles going on a hunting ex-
pedition during the dry season. He later created a trail to lead
others to the waterfall.
The people of Obosomase relied on the water for all their
daily activities, hence they gave it the name “ADOM” which
means grace.
This tourist sites can be found in the Eastern Region,
Obosomase. It is a 36.6km, 1hour 9minutes drive from the
capital of Ghana, Accra with open hours from 8:00am to
6:00pm daily.
One has to hike for about 25 minutes to reach the entrance of
the waterfall.

NATURE’S POV
I’m embodied with vegetation, animals of all kinds, river bodies,
breathtaking landscapes and many more.

Within holds a lot of significance to nature, I love to to be talked

about, witnessed and explored.

I provide society with food, water, and a place for relaxation.

When others visit me, I connect with them deeply, they can testify
so.

My importance is beyond understanding but should not be looked

down upon.
With me, I provide jobs, means of transportation, and help with the
economy.

My uses are unlimited but most importantly, I loved to be noticed

and appreciated.
