FLOOR FRAMING –
Wood Beam Take-Off
Assume foundation wall thickness
Is 200mm
Quantify the wood beam.

Calculation:
Inside dimension = outside dimension – foundation wall thickness
Inside dimension (length) = 15.00m – 2(0.20m)
= 15.00m – 0.40m
= 14.60m
Hence, beam length = inside dimension + bearing distance
= 14.60m + (2 x 0.089m)
= 14.60m + 0.178m
= 14.78m
However, on drawings, it shows that there are 3 -38 x 235
Hence, there is 44.34m of 38 x 235 lumber

Lumber Sizes:
FLOOR FRAMING – Measuring Sill Plates
Quantify the sill plate length.

Sill plate length = 2 (15.00 + 7.20) = 44.40m

FLOOR FRAMING – Measuring Wood Floor
Joists
Quantify the joists.

15,000/400 = 38 spaces +1 = 39 joists

2 bays, hence, 2 bays = 39 x 2 = 78 joists
Extra joists under walls = 7
Hence, total joists = 85 No.

FLOOR FRAMING – Measuring Joist
Headers
Calculate joist headers.
2 x 15m = 30m
FLOOR FRAMING – Measuring Bridging
Say metal bridging required with each space between joists
requiring two pieces
FLOOR FRAMING – Bridging
Say metal bridging required with each space between joists
requiring two pieces

38 spaces between joists

Hence 38 x 2 x 2 = 152 pieces
FLOOR FRAMING –CROSS BRIDGING,
BLOCKING AND WOOD STRAPPING
FLOOR FRAMING – Measuring Sheathing
Essentially area, but for ordering purposes, need to know
size of sheets.

Say 1.22 x 2.44 sheets used.

Sheets of plywood = area of coverage/2.98m2
= 15.00 m x 7.20m/2.98m2
= 36.24 sheets = 37 sheets
+ Waste (as for ordering) 5%, hence, order 38 sheets

Where:
N = Number of feet (board measure)
P = Number of pieces of lumber
W = Width of the lumber (in inches)
L = Length of the pieces (in feet)
T = Thickness of the lumber (in inches)
12 = inches (one foot), a constant – it does not
