Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English 9

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. identify different literary devices;
b. explain the literary devices used; and
c. give five sentences using the different literary devices.

Before proceeding on lesson today, should have a short recap about
the topic discussed last day which is the technology and its advantages
and disadvantages to humans.
B. Motivation
The class will find in the puzzle the following words: Simile, Metaphor,
Hyperbole, Personification, Rhyme, Repetition, Onomatopeia,
Alliteration, and Oxymoron.
C. Presentation of the Lesson
The teacher will asks the students what they notice about the words
they find in the puzzle.
D. Discussion
The teacher discusses and asks the students about literary devices
and its different types.
1. Simile- it is a literary devices that used to compare two different
things and show a common quality between them. It uses “like” or
“as” in comparing things.
Example:
Her skin is soft as cotton.
2. Metaphor- it is a literary devices that uses one thing to mean
another and makes a comparison between the two. It is almost similar
with simile, however, the difference is that metaphor does not use the
word “like” or “as”.
Example:
Mary is the black sheep of the family.
3. Hyperbole- it is deliberate exaggeration of actions and ideas for
the sake of emphasis.
Example:
I love you to the moon and back.
4. Personification- it gives a thing, an idea or an animal human
qualities.
Example:
The flowers are dancing beside the lake
5. Onomatopeia- is a word which represents or imitates natural
sounds.
Example:
The car horn beeped loudly.
6. Alliteration- It refers to the same consonant sounds in words
coming together.
Example:
She sells seashells at seashore.
7. Oxymoron- is significant literary device as it allows the author to
use contradictory, contrasting concepts placed together in manner
that actually ends up making strange and slightly complex manner.
Example:
Be careful in the playground, run slowly.
8. Rhyme- is the practice of rhyming words placed at the end of the
lines in prose or poetry. Rhyme scheme refers to the order in which
particular words rhyme.
Example:
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.
9. Repetition- is a literary device that involves using the same word
or phrase over and over again in a piece of writing or speech.
Example:
I have to practice my times tables over and over and over again so I
can learn them.

E. Application
The teacher will group the students into 5 groups. Each group will
give five sentences using the different literary devices and present in
the front of class.
Group 1- Hyperbole
Group 2- Personification
Group 3-Rhyme
Group 4- Metaphor
Group 5- Simile

G. Generalization
Ask the students on what they have learned from the topic.

Identify the literary devices in the sentence below. Write if it is SIMILE,
METAPHOR, HYPERBOLE, PERSONIFICATION, ONOMATOPEIA,
ALLITERATION, OXYMORON, RHYME, and REPETITION.

V. Assignment
Give 2 examples of each literary devices.
