Water pollution

the contamination of water sources by substances which make the water

unusable for drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities
Soil eriosion

Soil erosion is the displacement of the upper layer of soil; it is a form

of soil degradation. This natural process is caused by the dynamic
activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice, snow, air, plants, and
animals.
Nitrate pollution

Although a necessary nutrient for plants, high nitrate levels in people can harm the
respiratory and reproductive system, kidney, spleen and thyroid in children and adults. It is
particularly harmful to infants. In California, nitrate is one of the most common groundwater
contaminants.
Why should we be concerned with water pollution

Harmful algae is the reslut of excess nutrient pollution in the water. Poor water quality
has its most direct impact on aquatic wildlife, particularly fish, bugs, and plants. Excess
nutrients, sediment, road salt, and other contaminants can reduce the variety and
hardeniss of organisms living in the states waters.
Why should we be concerned with soil ersion

Erosion removes topsoil, reduces levels of soil organic matter, and contributes to the
breakdown of soil structure. This creates a less favorable environment for plant growth.
Why should we be concerned with nitrate pollution

Though nitrates occur naturally, and at low levels are safe (and in fact, offer protection against
pathogens), studies show that very high levels of nitrates can increase the risk of some cancers,
birth defects, and thyroid diseases.
How we can solve water pollution

1. Pick up litter and throw it away in a garbage can.

2. Blow or sweep fertilizer back onto the grass if it gets onto paved areas. ...
3. Mulch or compost grass or yard waste. ...
4. Wash your car or outdoor equipment where it can flow to a gravel or grassy
area instead of a street
How we can solve soil erision

1. Maintaining a healthy, perennial plant cover.

2. Mulching.
3. Planting a cover crop – such as winter rye in vegetable gardens. ...
4. Placing crushed stone, wood chips, and other similar materials in heavily used
areas where vegetation is hard to establish and maintain.
How can we solve nitrate pollution

1. Reduce inputs. The best way to prevent nitrates and other chemicals from leaving crop
fields, either through runoff or leaching into groundwater, is to simply reduce the amount
of fertilizer and pesticides that are applied.
2. Improve soil health. ...
3. Implement a Drainage Water Management (DWM) system.
