Preface:

The preface begins with the authors stating that as time progresses, we as humans seem to make

it harder to understand different perspectives and beliefs of one another. That it is important for

us to listen to each other’s opinions even if we disagree with them. They also mention the use of

templates and how they can be useful in making good academic conversations and arguments.

The preface also mentions stuff like the purpose of the book and how it is organized. As well as

things the book doesn’t do like show logical principles as the main purpose of the book is to get

students to create and write arguments based on debates and discussions.

Introduction

The introduction mainly focuses on different templates that writers can use for their essays or

help improve their critical thinking skills in certain arguments. The authors also mention that

when making an argument, it’s always important to also add the ideas and beliefs of someone

who is against the claim of your argument.

Chapter 1

The authors mention that when making an argument, it is important to mention “what others are

saying” before you begin to say your own opinions and beliefs. This is an important step when

someone is trying to grab your audience’s attention as to why they are making the argument in

the first place.

Chapter 2

This chapter starts off with the importance of summarizing what others say in your essay. When

writing a summary, it is important to make sure that the summary stays true to what the other

person said while also trying to say it in your own words. The authors also said that when

summarizing one’s argument, it is important to recognize and understand their perspective and

why they disagree with your argument. While at the same time, it is also crucial to add just as

much as your argument so that your essay won’t feel one-sided.

Chapter 3

This chapter focuses mainly on the importance of quoting. Using quotation marks when using

someone else’s words, it can make your argument fair and accurate. Quoting can act as a kind of

proof of someone else’s words. The authors also mention that it’s to know what and how much

you quote. Quoting something that isn’t relevant to the argument can negatively affect your

claim. Quoting too little can indicate that you can’t be bothered to look for the author’s words,

and quoting too much can leave little room for your own comments.
