Dear Families,

In the classroom this week, your child will be learning about the ocean! As
we continue to dive into the material, we will be creating fun crafts, reading new
books and learning an abundance of new things. One of the goals for this week is
to complete a family fun activity between you and your student! The activity
engages fine motor skills through a simple yet exciting art project.

The bag attached to the letter has the materials and directions needed to
help you and your student complete the activity. This may take about 2 days to
complete, so please, take your time and have fun! Once it’s complete, please
bring the materials back along with your finished products so that your student
can share the hard work they did!

Sincerely,
Anna Gentile
Ocean Sun Catchers

Materials in the bag:

 5 Coffee Filters
 Ocean Animal Silhouettes
 5 Paper Plates

Materials needed from around the house:

 A glue stick
 A spray bottle or plastic cups
 Scissors
 Markers

Directions:
 First, take out one coffee filter per person
 Place the coffee filter on a paper plate so that any marker that leaks
through will spread onto the plate
 Next, take the markers and color all over the front of your coffee filter. You
can make a pattern, design or you can just scribble
 Take your time and use as many markers as you would like
 When the coffee filter is all filled up, take your cup of water or your spray
bottle and fill it with water
 Make sure to keep the filter on your paper plate and then spray your coffee
filter! If you are using a cup, you can slowly dump some of the water on
your coffee filter at a time or use a spoon to scoop out some water and
pour it all over your filter that way too.
 Get the coffee filter nice and wet and watch the surprise happen!
 The water will cause the marker to spread, making your soon to be sun
catcher even more colorful and while even blending some of the colors
together.
 Once the filter is completely wet and all the marker has spread, keep the
filter on the paper plate and place it in a sunny area to help it dry.
 It may take a few hours for your sun catcher to dry completely so you can
let it sit for a day until it’s dry enough to glue an animal onto the front.
 Once your sun catcher is dry, grab a glue stick, a pair of scissors and grab
the paper from the bag that has the ocean animal silhouettes on it.
 Find an animal that you like from the paper and cut it out.
 Once the animal is cut out, take your glue stick and cover the back of your
animal (the white side) with glue
 Place the animal into the middle of your sun catcher and press it down
 As soon as your animal is pressed down and dried, your sun catcher is
complete!

Once your sun catchers are complete, place them back into the plastic bag that
the materials came in and your child can bring back the materials and finished
product to share with the class.
