The Contribution of Social Media to Grade 10 Students

of Pateros National High School

During Blended Learning

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

During pandemic, blended learning was implemented in different schools in the

Philippines. Blended learning is a style of education that combines online educational

materials and opportunities for interaction online through different platforms such as Zoom,

Google Meet, Messenger, Webex Meetings, and etc. The Philippine Government implement

blended learning to ensure the safety of the students while studying and learning at their

homes.

Social Media plays a vital role throughout the implementation of blended learning.

Social media has become a way for teachers to communicate with their students. Through

social media, teachers can reach out to students and parents by making an announcement in

different social media platform. It allows students to submit their outputs, assignments and

performance task without the need of going outside. Teachers were able to teach students

through a video presentation that can be uploaded in different social media platforms such as

Facebook, YouTube, Tiktok and etc.

Social Media became the backbone of blended learning. It helps students to continue

learning amidst the pandemic. And it serves as a way of communication for teachers and

students.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study sought to determine the contributions and benefits of Social Media to

selected Grade 10 Students of Pateros National High School during Blended Learning.

III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be undertaken to understand and find out if Social Media is

beneficial to Grade 10 Students of Pateros National High School during Blended

Learning. Through this study the researcher will be able to know if using social media

during blended learning is more beneficial than being disadvantageous.

IV. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Design

This study is qualitative in nature since the research question provided leads to a

non-numerical data. The researcher used an open-ended questions to obtain the opinion,

thoughts and experiences of the respondents. Descriptive method is used in this study to

further understand and describe the contribution of Social Media to Grade 10 Students of

Pateros National High School during Blended Learning.

B. Respondents

The researcher selected the high school students from Pateros National High

School to be the respondents of the study, preferably the 10th grade. The researcher came
up with 20 students as a respondents coming from Grade 10 Special Science Class. They

are the ones who have enough knowledge and experienced about blended learning.

C. Data Gathering

The study was conducted through a questionnaire made by the researcher. The

researcher used a survey through google forms that serves as the source of data. The

questionnaire was drawn based on research readings, observation and studies.

D. Statistical Treatments

The responses from the questionnaire by Grade 10 Special Science Class students

were compiled, tallied and analyzed thoroughly by the researcher. The researcher

converted the numerical data from the questionnaire into percentages. The researcher

visualize the relationships between gathered data by using pie graphs.


As shown in the graph above, 20 out of 20 respondents (100%) has experienced

blended learning.

As shown in the graph above, 20 out of 20 respondents (100%) agreed that Social

Media is helpful and beneficial during blended learning.


As seen in the graph above, a majority of 13 out of 20 respondents (65%) believes

that communication is the greatest contribution of social media during blended learning,

3 out of 20 respondents (15%) for source of information, another 3 out of 20 respondents

(15%) for educating and learning, and 1 out of 20 respondents (5%) stated his/her own

reason.

V. EVALUATION

Based on the gathered data from the questionnaire, 100% or 20 out of 20

respondents believes that Social Media is helpful and beneficial for them during Blended

Learning. And 65% or a majority of 13 out of 19 respondents said that communication is

the greatest contribution of social media during blended learning.

VI. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

CONCLUSION

Based in the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn :

1. The researcher therefore conclude that Social Media is really helpful and beneficial to

Grade 10 students specially during blended learning. It has a significant contribution to

the education of grade 10 students in the midst of pandemic.


2. The researcher therefore conclude that using social media during blended learning is

more beneficial than being disadvantageous.

3. The researcher conclude that communication is the greatest contribution of Social Media

to Grade 10 students during blended learning. Social Media helps students to

communicate with their teachers as well as with their classmates during blended learning.

It keeps students to be updated on their classwork.

4. The researcher found out that Grade 10 students learned a lot with the help of the

information uploaded in different social media platform.

RECOMMENDATION

After a thorough data analysis, the researcher recommended future researchers

who wants to further expand the study in order to contribute to the development of social

media. Continuing this study could have a significant impact on the development of

social media. If further research is conducted, social media can be develop and improve,

making it more beneficial for students.

It is also recommended that future researchers may explore and study the impact

of Social Media in the academic performance of Grade 10 students. Future researchers

would have to study about the good as well as the bad effects of Social Media in the

academic performance of Grade 10 students.
