Day 3
Multiplication

Counting takes a lot of time, especially when there are many

objects.
For instance, it may take a lot of time to count all the squares
shown on the right.
A quicker way:
• is to add 16 repeatedly: 16 + 16 + 16 + ...
• But if you can calculate 18 × 16, it is even quicker!
• To be able to calculate something like 18 × 16, you need to
• know some multiplication facts, such as 10 × 6 = 60, 8 × 6 = 48,
10 × 10 = 100 and 8 × 10 = 80.

In this unit you will learn many facts like these.

1. How many squares are shown on this page?

2. Compare your answer with that of a classmate.

Count objects

(a) How many bananas are there in one bunch?

(b) How many bananas are there in five bunches?
(c) How many bananas are there in ten bunches?
(d) How many bananas are there in nine bunches?
(e) How many bananas are there in seven bunches?
(f) How many bananas are there in six bunches?

What did you notice?

• 3 is added every time.
• You have counted in multiples of 3.
• 1 bunch has 3 bananas.
• It can be written using symbols: 1 x 3 = 3
• 5 bunches of 3 is 15: 5 x 3 = 15
• 10 bunches of 3 is 30: 10 x 3 = 30
• 9 bunches of 3 is 27: 9 x 3 = 27
• 7 bunches of 3 is 21: 7 x 3 = 21
• 6 bunches of 3 is 18: 6 x 3 = 18

CLASS ACTIVITIY
Complete the following activity.

1. Use the numbers in the counting pattern that you wrote for question 3 to say how much
each of the following is.

(a) 6 x 3 (b) 7 x 3 (c) 8 x 3 (d) 4 x 3

2. How much is each of the following?

(a) 10 x 3 (b) 9 x 3 (c)7 x 3 (d) 5 x 3
(e) 2 x 3 (f) 3 x 3 (g) 6 x 3 (h) 4 x 3

You multiplied by 3 every time. This is called the 3-multipliation table.

A. Multiplication in reverse

Using multiplication facts to solve problems

A. David paid R63 for 7 packets of sweets.

How much did each packet cost?

B. How many breads can Musi buy for R48

when each bread costs R6?

The table on the right can help you solve

A and B.

Look at the table. Note that the numbers 48 and 63 are coloured in. Now use the table to find the
answers to the following questions.
(a) How many sixes make up 48? (b) 7 × which number? = 63

Problem A
• 63 = 7 x ___; OR On the table we see that:
• How many 7s is equal to 63; OR • 63 = 7 x 9.
• 7 x ___ = 63 • 7 x 9 = 63

When we calculate in reverse(backwards), we find that we are dividing to find the answer:
63 ÷ 7 = 9

Problem B On the table we see that:

• 48 = 6x ___; OR • 48= 6 x 8.
• How many 6s is equal to 48; OR • 6x 8 = 48
• __ X 6 = 48 48 ÷ 6 = 8

Day 8
Multiplication with 3 or more numbers

Example 1
(a) Calculate 68 x7.
(b) Break up 68 into 60 and 8

Example 2
If 3 or more numbers are multiplied with each other, these numbers can be rearranged with the
answer remaining the same.

(a) 2x5x7 2x7x5

= 10 x 7 = 14 x 5

= 70 = 70

(b) 25 x 7 x 4 can be calculated easier:

Multiplying with larger numbers
Example 1
17 columns
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
17 x 7 can be calculated by showing
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x 7 rows
It visually, as shown in the diagram x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
on the right. x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
There are 17 columns and 7 rows.
10 columns + 7 columns

x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x 7 rows
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x

We can divide the diagram so that we have 10 columns + 7 columns and 7 rows each.
10 columns x 7 rows + 7 columns x 7 rows
= 70 + 49
= 119 altogether

Example 2
46 x 37 may be calculated using
the grid or area model. 30 + 7
• Start by breaking each
number into each place 40 x 30 = 1 200 40 x 7 = 280
values
• 46 = 40 + 6 en 37 = 30 + 7
• Draw a grid.
• Fill in the numbers as indicated 6 x 30 = 180 6 x 7 = 42
on the right.
• Multiply the numbers.
• Add the the shaded answers/
products together 46 x 37
= 1 200 + 280 + 180 + 42
= 1000 + 200 + 200 + 80 + 100 + 80 + 40 + 2
= 1 702

Example 3

64 x 78 may also be calculated as

Follows:
• Start by breaking each number into each
place values
• 64 = (60 + 4) en 78 = (70 + 8)
• Use brackets when breaking up numbers
• Multiply each of the of values of the first
numbers with values of the second
number.
• Add all the products together.
