1830 Independence of Belgium

1831 Constitution: parliament

Limited voting rights: only those who paid enough taxes = rich citizens

 Little attention for the poor

1914-1918 First World War: fear for revolts



1919 Limited voting rights: one man, one vote

1948 Women's right to vote

1981 Young people from the age of 18 can vote

Conclusion: limited voting rights until 1981  limited democracy until 1981
