Materials/Resources: writing their answers, the teacher will go around the class and listen in on the
students answers.
When the class (or most of it) is finished have them share their answers with each
other.
- Think-pair-share: Instruct students to turn to a classmate and share their answers.
They can share their ideas with each other and come up with new ones if they
want.
After, discuss with the class. How did it go? What is research to them? What do
they want to research?
Then explain that what research is. Research is the process of solving problems
and finding facts to back it up in an organized way.

Part 1 of Activity:

Step 1: Have the students share their ideas. Let them know that if the question is
too broad they will have a hard time.
Model examples of research topic :
- Too Broad: Flowers
- Just Right: Sunflowers

- Too Broad: Black History Month

- Just Right: Ruth Lloyd’s life Have students come up with a few examples as a
class.

Give students a few more minutes to fix their research prompt before moving on.

Step 2: I will pass out a note taking worksheet for my students to follow along as
they are finding sources. I will model how to fill out the guide and answer all the
questions the questions have.
I will be providing the class with a list of sources they can use to help them with
their research or give them ideas of sources they can use.

While the students are taking notes, I will remind them NOT to copy word for
word but take ideas that they like from the sources and put it all in their own
words. As they are taking notes, I will also be walking around, assisting them,
checking understanding and answering they might have.

* I will also make sure that the students have a document open they can put links
of the sources they are using them at the end.

Step 3: Students will take their note taking guide and create a rough for their final
paper. Students will be able to create a rough draft from the note taking guide. I
will model for student how they can create a rough draft with with their guide. I
will be giving them time to ask questions and come up with a plan to write their
draft.
