Thesis Statement

● In the short story “Thank you Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, the author uses a character and irony to develop the

theme that we should have empathy for others because we never know what they’re going through or because we

might’ve been in that situation already.

Theme

● The most predominant theme in the short story is empathy.

This is shown from the fact that Mrs. Jones addresses the boy telling him how she once did not also have a lot of

money to buy the things she wanted growing up. And this is what led her to bring the boy into her home in the first

place, opening him up to a second chance.


Three literary devices/techniques

● Characters - Author uses Mrs. Roger to demonstrate the empathy she had towards roger

● Irony

● Symbolism- Certain objects in the passage can be seen having more than one meaning.

● Point of view - Author uses Third Person Objective as a way to give the reader a look at both sides of the story
